If we will make seeking God our priority, He will show us His purpose and work through us in ways we've never imagined.

The "how" isn't addressed so much as the "why," and for that reason, I really took my time reading this book.

Rumors of God: Experience the Kind of Faith You've Only Heard About is a fantastic read. It's challenging, insightful and convicting. Although I've had a Kindle for a few months now, this book inspired me to learn how to use the device's highlighting feature -- and I used it quite liberally. There's so much good stuff here.

Written by two Australian men who both emigrated to the United States and became pastors in two very different American Churches, Rumors of God is a bit like a few other books I've read this year, such as [...] by David Platt. Both books challenge mainstream Christian culture to rise above the level of complacent, cultural church-ianity and live a life that is truly worthy of the radical, life-changing Gospel.

Comparing Rumors of God to other books isn't to say that it's unoriginal or lesser in anyway. I thought Radical was amazing. I loved this book, too. Their approaches are slightly different, but their message is the same. What I really liked about Rumors of God is how real these guys are - their stories help illustrate the points they discuss.

I highly recommend this book. You'll walk away challenged and inspired, wanting to live a different kind of faith that really makes a difference.

It's a gift to be able to exegete the Scriptures in a way that makes them come alive. To be able to do that and also exegete culture in an eye-opening way is even more rare. Rumors of God does just that. Today it's far too easy for people to mindlessly go through the motions. Whitehead and Tyson remind us of a life more than just going through the motions...a promise of life to the full - pick up this book and live it out!

I was very intrigued by the title. Spirituality for me has always been something where God is somehow doing so much in the lives of others, leaving me listening to a bunch of rumors. This book was so refreshing. The authors used provocative language as well as compelling stories that stirred up a hunger that left me saying - I want to know this God!

Buy it, read it...and join the movement where God is no longer a rumor, but actively at work in your life!!!

At a time when theories on the mission of God abound, it is deeply refreshing to hear from two faithful practitioners. Whitehead and Tyson combine gripping real-life stories with progressive missional thinking to help stimulate our imaginations toward kingdom possibilities for our time. When you put this book down you will find yourself in awe of God's beauty and power at work in both the city and the suburb. Great for the pastor, the theorist and the lay person alike.

Rumors of God: Experience the Kind of Faith You've Only Heard About by Darren Whitehead and Jon Tyson is a book driven by stories. Whitehead and Tyson, friends since they were teenagers, are both from Australia and are both pastors, Whitehead at Willow Creek in Illinois and Tyson at Trinity Grace in New York City. The stories they share are personal and pastoral, illustrating that "a better way, another dream, [and] an unimagined future" is possible for people of faith in the changing world.

Each chapter in Rumors of God takes on a different "rumored" theme (rumors of grace, rumors of generosity, etc.) and is developed following a pattern familiar to those who have read other "Christian living" books: a personal story supported by a scriptural illustration and concluding with a clear and simple application. Since the structure and flow of each chapter is similar, the book read like a collection of standalone stories or sermons connected by common language and style pointing towards the real potential for the Christian faith to transform lives and be good news to the world around us.

I enjoyed reading Rumors of God; it was a quick, light read with interesting stories, but, for me, it didn't rock the boat or change any paradigms of my thinking. This could be a good resource for someone who's struggling with (or at an early stage of) faith or been hurt by churches.

Format: Paperback
Like the magical bottomless bags in Harry Potter, Rumors of God by Pastors Darren Whitehead and Jon Tyson unpacks an impressive array of deep truths to soothe the hearts and inspire the souls of the wary, the weary, the wandering and the wondering in the modern Christian community. With patience and passion they dive right in to the touchy, sticky subjects most of us want long to address but shy skittishly away from: grace, justice, commitment, community, and God-sized dreaming.

These men clearly both know their stuff and live like it. Compassion and grace pour out of their writing, softening the sharp edges of the challenges inherent in the truths they display. Despite reading several reviews prior to picking this up, I was completely unprepared for the hard-hitting topics inside. I've never seen controversial topics like commitment to others and church communities handled so adeptly or genuinely; nor have I ever heard anyone frame the debate about modern culture inside and outside of churches in such accurate, articulate and viable terms.

This book will not only reshape how you look at the key issues of our time - it will equip you to deal effectively with them in your own life and to share fresh hope and truth with others.
