Book Description

It seemed the perfect stunt to save the ailing Adventure Channel. When a famed anthropologist disappears in the middle of a formidable African jungle while searching for a legendary--and reportedly bloodthirsty--"lost tribe," fading star Max Carrington and his bumbling television crew swiftly set off to find him. Their goal: bring him back, alive or dead, documenting every moment along the way for a blockbuster television event. Back home, their dramatic live video dispatches from the middle of the jungle swiftly become the media sensation of the moment. But when members of the crew start disappearing as well, they realize too late that much more than the network's fortunes are at risk...

From the Author

This book was inspired by my experiences working on documentaries  around the world for National Geographic Television.  Having served in the Peace Corps in West Africa, I was a natural pick for the more rugged projects that involved trekking into distant parts of Africa, camping in the middle of the jungle, and even chasing man-eating predators.

Many of the experiences described in the book actually took place--from the small details, like waking up in the middle of the night to spooky sounds outside my tent and a desperately full bladder, to getting lost in the middle of the jungle.  While no one fortunately disappeared in the middle of any of these productions, we did often find ourselves questioning the wisdom of executives who were dictating moves from the comfort of their homes and offices back in the US, wondering if we were putting ourselves in compromising situations for the sake of a more dramatic story line.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Savage Satire of Ratings-Driven Adventure Television January 21, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Carrie Regan's "Rumors of Savages" is a wickedly funny, fast-paced depiction of a journalistic quest to find a tribe of savage headhunters in the depths of the African jungles. Once I picked up this book, I couldn't put it down, howling my way through page after page. I've always found the old adage to be true that the best writing is grounded in personal experience. And as the action of this book cuts back and forth between the depths of the jungle and news headquarters in New York, Regan brings the full breadth of her experience as an intrepid television producer and later as a news executive to bear, bringing the story to life in vivid and credible detail. As a nonfiction author writing about uncontacted tribes in the Amazon, I confess to feeling mounting trepidation as I entered the world Regan so convincingly creates. Damn, I thought, why can't I write like this? And why can't I be just one-tenth as funny? News hounds and armchair adventures will be especially delighted, but anyone who appreciates a good read will enjoy this book. Bravissimo, Ms. Regan! I'm looking forward to the next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two words: AWE SOME! March 29, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
With our society so enamored with the "reality" of Reality TV, this book sheds light on the madness behind the machine. The personalities are so real, but what's more - even though the book is labeled "fiction," the STORY seems so plausible. THAT made it impossible to put down.

I concur with the other reviewers here, who say everything that should be said. Carrie Regan has written a fun, thrilling, humorous, aggravating, romantic and engaging story and, now with this book behind her, I can't wait to see what she comes up with next!

Buy this book - and get ready to be drawn in...you'll be glad you did!

4.0 out of 5 stars Page Turner! April 24, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
As someone who works in documentary television, I thoroughly enjoyed Regan's roller-coaster tale of a TV crew's mission to find a missing anthropologist...while of course documenting their every step to get the exclusive naval gazing inside story. With plot twists and turns that kept me on edge, and wry humor to boot, Rumors of Savages is one great read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very good story!
Great read! The only reason I rated it three instead of five stars was the foul language. The story could have been just as effective without the bad language.
