This book is a good case of what we face in the present age and for christians a description of the 2 worlds we live in. It is a encouraging book which calls for christians to be aware of temptations of this present age and to be watchful. Only by the Spirit can we overcome the temptations, so do not be fooled. We are called to be light in the world and for this cause we are challenged to look at our life style. So much have we compromised withe world that we don't appear any different from the world in divorce, adultery and lifestyle. Time to wake up and be in the world but not of the world. A challenging book for our times.

This was the first bk of Yancy's I've read and I'm anxious to read his others as I've heard this isn't even the best one. Rumours would be a good bk for anyone searching for God, yet as a Christian, I found it led to deeper thoughts about the unseen world. We often live in the doldrums of daily life not realizing there is a spiritual world that is alive and nearer than we think. His bk reads like you've sat down and read his personal(and very interesting) journal.

Another winner from Yancey. Deals with his idea of the "invisible" world that exists along with the visible one that we deal with each day. This topic was one CS Lewis dealt with quite a bit as well. The thing I love about Phil's books besides his great writing style is all the great annecdotes and stories he has. Hey you Christians out there...dont buy the 27th book of Left Behind series! Buy this book instead.

Yancey takes a shot at tackling the subject of doubt, and gives a thoughtful and at times personal account of his thoughts on the subject. I liked the book overall, and Yancey definitely gives voice to both the doubts and the answers to those doubts, at least for him. I like his use of illustrations from his travels and from his various experiences. The book is a good one, and gives the reader a lot to consider in one's own struggle with doubt. Still, I felt that Yancey doesn't doubt very much, or if he does, he doesn't go deep enough in exploring more serious doubts about God. I think the book is good for people who are already Christians and who wrestle with some light doubting. But for seekers who do not already accept much of what Christians take for granted, Yancey does not go deep enough in describing doubt or how to overcome it. Perhaps that was not his intent in this book, certainly others have attempted it and come up short. For Christians wishing to deepen their faith and be challenged in overcoming doubt, this book delivers nicely. For those struggling with serious doubt, I think this book can help but readers may want to look elsewhere for a more indepth study.

I've read many of his columns on the back page of Christianity Today, but this is the first book of Philip Yancey's that I have read. Though this particular book is not one of my all-time favorites, I can now understand why Yancey is so popular.

In "Rumours of Another World," he tries to make a case for a world beyond the natural world which we can observe and understand. He is a great story-teller and offers many real-life examples of people whose lives offer "evidence" for the reality of a supernatural world. Though certainly an intellectual man, Yancey remains very readable. He takes some very abstract ideas and offers them to his readers in an accessible way that demonstrates his skill as a writer. He tackles weighty issues like sin and evil and doubt and deals with them honestly and carefully.

My primary critique of this book is that it seemed to meander a bit lazily from idea to idea, and I wondered throughout how certain chapters and passages were connected to each other. Having read the book over the course of these past two weeks, I'm having trouble even now articulating what sort of specific impact the book has had on me.

In any case, somewhat rambling as it may have been, I enjoyed "Rumours of Another World." It was an easy, quick read. I appreciate Yancey's complete candor and evident humility. I like his obvious appreciation for church history. He is a deep thinker and a gifted writer who has written a quality book about difficult ideas that will help many folks, Christians and non-Christians alike, to reflect on the implications of a supernatural world operating concurrently with the one that we more clearly observe from day to day. I'm glad that I read his musings about these big issues and am happy to recommend "Rumours" to others.

This is the first book I have read by this author and I look forward to reading others. Already a Christian, this has lead me deeper into my faith and is an excellent read for anyone. At first I struggled getting into the book, but quickly found that it touched on many issues I find myself dealing with. Helps me to be intentional and not so passive in regards to the sins we deal with each and every day.

Philip Yancey carries the reader along a journey, often sharing his own experiences. It's like walking along with him as he organizes his thoughts and experiences. At the end, you know you hve been with a friend.
