Book Description

April 7, 2009
Rosemary Mendes, looking for a new life after her husband's death, believes she has found a refuge in California's remote Trinity Alps. She's not looking for Eden, just a place where she can live alone and not bother or be bothered by anyone. Contrary to her intentions, she is drawn into the life of the small community. And she has a growing sense of identification with another newcomer whom she never met, a young woman found shot dead in the forest, whose dog she adopts. Like Rosemary, the mystery woman came there to live a self-sufficient life but women who don't conform to familial and societal expectations can expect to be bothered...and more. Rosemary's efforts to learn more about "Wandering Girl" (the murdered woman's e-mail alias) prove both successful and dangerous.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

When Michelle Mike Morgan turns up shot in the back near her woodland cabin, Rosemary Mendes takes in Mike's dog and determines to uncover the dead woman's past in LaPierre's well-plotted stand-alone, which vividly paints life at its simplest—and ugliest. Rosemary has moved to Northern California's sparsely populated Trinity County to shake the threats of her deceased husband's money-grubbing relatives and for the peaceful, slower-paced lifestyle. In fact, between her worrisome neighbors and vandalism problems, her life has hardly been uneventful—and Sheriff Gus Angstrom, a widower, is clearly interested in more than her case-related information. Murder and kidnapping drive the action to a heart-slamming conclusion. Fans of LaPierre's cozy series set in Port Silva, Calif. (Family Business, etc.), will find virtually no gore, but they should be prepared for the kind of language typical of a gritty police procedural. (Apr.)

From Booklist

After her husband’s accidental death, Rosemary Mendes retreats to small-town Weaverville in northern California to start a new life and to avoid her grasping in-laws, who believe she owes them part of the insurance money. When a young woman, Mike Morgan, is shot, Rosemary feels the need to learn about Mike because she identifies with her, a loner who has also escaped from her past. Accompanied by Mike’s dog, Tank, whom Rosemary reluctantly adopts but quickly grows to love, she talks to people to get a sense of Mike’s life. While she is doing so, strange things begin to happen: the phone rings, but no one is on the line; her windshield is shot out; and deer guts are left in her yard. Is it possible that Mike was murdered, rather than shot by a careless hunter? Or is someone targeting Rosemary? Well-developed, sympathetic main characters; a lovingly described small-town setting; and several engaging plotlines make for a satisfying mystery. --Sue O'Brien

5.0 out of 5 stars A Well-written Cozy, June 24, 2009

This review is from: Run a Crooked Mile (Paperback)
that features a smart, independent widow who can add two and two to get four, and when you add two more will get six right away. This is not about violence, though there is some at a distance, nor blood, though there is some of that, too. This is about Trinity County in California and the people who live there: a hard-working sheriff, good neighbors, and a reclusive woman who was inexplicably shot in the woods. And then there's her dog. His name is Tank and he's a keeper. The widow, Rosemary, just wants a simple, quiet life after the death of her husband, but she is saddened that the victim dies unknown, unmourned, and her body is in limbo in the morgue. Rosemary is not a PI, not a detective, not normally a snoop. Her children, with whom she has an excellent but distant relationship as they live their lives, keep in touch, but Rosemary is too smart and clever to do nothing but drink a gin or two and read a book. What she really is, is curious and that sets in motion a series of events that keep you turning pages. The author gives us a pleasant scene in wooded northern California, interesting people involved and a believable plot. Perfect!

3.0 out of 5 stars Just Ok, October 18, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Run a Crooked Mile (Paperback)
This was a book club book for me. I felt that it was very difficult to get through and that the "mystery and suspense" didn't hold my attention. The most interesting thing to me was the dog. I can read books quickly in general but with this book, it seems to have taken forever to get through. I found myself many times picking up a different book and finishing it before coming back to this book.

I also felt that this book was not a very good book club selection. There wasn't enough information to discuss or much character development.

I would recommend getting this at the library before spending hard earned cash.

5.0 out of 5 stars strong amateur sleuth, April 11, 2009
This review is from: Run a Crooked Mile (Paperback)
With the death of her husband, Rosemary Mendes decides she needs to start over. Using the money from the life insurance and encouraged by her adult sons while ignoring the rest of the family's whining she moves to rustic Weaverville, California in the remote northern Trinity Alps. She surprises herself when she becomes active in the community as she planned on being a loner, but the acceptance of the townfolk surprised her while making her feel good.

When another female newcomer Michelle "Mike" Morgan is shot to death in what is reported as a hunting accident, Rosemary has doubts as she is related to many hunters who never mistook a human for a deer. Still she reluctantly adopts Mike's dog Tank. Meanwhile during her latest recurring meal sharing with local Gray Campbell, she learns no one knew much about Mike or her dog. Deciding the escape to Trinity County bonded her to a dead woman she never met; Rosemary investigates who Mike was and why she was murdered; as the outsider believes the hunting accident was a homicide.

Leaving the Port Silva mysteries, Janet LaPierre provides a strong amateur sleuth starring a tough caring widow who is unaware initially of the danger she brings onto herself when she cannot resist the lure of the coincidence of two single females coming to town to start over. The story line is fast-paced, but provides a lucid sense of location as the real town of Weaverville comes vividly alive. Fans will enjoy the misadventures of Rosemary and her adopted "baby" Tank as they investigate Mike's murder over the objection of Sheriff Gus Angstrom who worries about her safety.
