From Publishers Weekly

Readers who can take an unrelieved diet of misery will feast on this story of a woman whose second husband shot her first husband in the presence of her two daughters. Jane married Johnny when she was in high school; after having one child, they divorced because he was a poor provider, although they still loved each other. She then wed Michael, a violent, abusive man whose every punch and kick, with little interference from the Lexington, Ky., police, is detailed here. When Johnny tried to help Jane move out, Michael killed him and received a prison term requiring him to serve only six and one-half years. Jane is now completing college. As depressing as her personal history is the picture of life in Appalachia, where every man is a king, notes the author, and every woman must marry lest she become a pariah, shunned by other women as a sexual threat. Jane now lives in the Midwest, her exact location a secret, and works with battered women. 20,000 first printing; author tour.

From Library Journal

Wells was abused by her second husband, Michael, who eventually killed her first husband, Johnny, in front of her and her children. The legal system repeatedly failed to protect her, and even after Michael was convicted and sent to prison (only for manslaughter), he continued to harass her, eventually forcing Wells to pay part of his legal fees. Wells is not a professional writer, and at times she strays into extraneous detail. But as a result the reader is given a close look at a life of fear, uncertainty, and frustration, made even scarier by a legal system that seemed only able?or willing?to work for those who knew how to manipulate it. In this case, the manipulator happened to be a murderer. For true crime collections.?Christine A. Moesch, Buffalo & Erie Cty. P.L., N.Y.

4.0 out of 5 stars Horrific and tragically suspenseful, August 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Run Jane Run (Hardcover)
After reading this book, its hard to believe that our Judiciary Courts let the convicts actual get away with murder. Jane Wells has really captured how the Social Services are unable to help people that are on the borderline or are in desperate need of help. After seeing her on the Montel Show, she had sparked my interest in her book. I not only cringed but cried when she and her daughters had to face such unnecessary barriers that were put by the system. I pray and hope to God that she is able to stay undercover from her ex-husband and that the children, especially the oldest can have a peaceful life and never have to suffer the torment and abuse that had been suffered by them all. My prayers are with Jane Wells and family. God Bless....

4.0 out of 5 stars A Battered Wife Tells All!, April 10, 2009
This review is from: Run Jane Run: A Survivor's Harrowing Story (Paperback)
Jane's second marriage to Michael went from a dream to a nightmare during her short time with him. Worse, she was pregnant and the Kentucky laws states that a pregnant wife can't leave her husband despite Michael's horrific abuse and the accounts told here. The book reveals a terrifying side as the woman, Jane, must stand alone to defend herself and her two daughters against an abusive, monstrous ex-husband who tortured her not only physically and psychologically as well. He couldn't let her go. She was a piece of property rather than a human being. Jane's escape from her hellish marriage wasn't easy and the cost was deadly. Despite the fact that Michael was clearly dangerous, authorities allowed him to be free causing more harm, grief, and a surprising murder. For Jane and her girls, they must live with the memories of Michael's reign of terror and the loss of Johnny who tried to protect them. Even in this day and age, Jane couldn't divorce her husband because she was pregnant and being abused. I hope the Kentucky laws have changed since then with this case.
