Editorial Reviews

After her husband suffers a debilitating stroke, spirited Irish housewife Vanetia Casey (Maxine Peake, Silk) struggles to keep her family together in the wake of tragedy. Help comes in the form of American doctor Ted Fielding (Saturday Night Live s Will Forte), whose research grant for documenting the family s recovery process takes care of finances but also requires that the straight-laced doctor live with the chaotic Casey family for two months. Although Vanetia initially resents living under Ted s microscope, she soon finds comfort in his calming presence, while Ted grows surprisingly accustomed to Vanetia s dynamic, unpredictable personality. As the two explore their bond within their unique situation, they discover that a new family is beginning to take shape around them. Uplifting and authentic, Academy Award®-nominated* director Steph Green s RUN & JUMP is an unexpected, unconventional romance about human connection and the power of acceptance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing study in family dynamics August 12, 2014
Format:DVD
Just how fluid is our definition of "family"?

Conor (Edward MacLiam) is an Irish carpenter who, at the age of 34, is unexpectedly felled by a stroke. Though he will never again be the man he was, Conor recovers sufficiently to allow him to return home to his wife, Vanetia (Maxine Peak), and two children. However, he is accompanied by Ted Fielding (a generally miscast Will Forte), an American brain specialist who moves in with the family so he can monitor and study Conor's condition on a 24/7 basis. While Ted, a single man without a wife or children of his own, is supposed to remain a neutral, emotionally detached observer of the situation, he finds himself more and more filling the void left by Conor, slipping into the role of father to the children and husband to the wife. Will Conor erupt in a jealous rage at this blatant disruption of his family unit, or will he have the grace to accept the fact that Ted can provide for his loved ones in a way that he himself no longer can?

Written by Ailbhe Keogan and Steph Green and directed by Green, "Run & Jump" is an unassuming, slice-of-life drama that is less about a man`s struggle to overcome the harsh hand that`s been dealt him and more about the effect that hand is having on those around him. How, the movie asks, does one re-establish a familial norm when the dynamics have effectively shifted and everyone`s role in that family has been essentially redefined? This relationship-shuffling manifests itself in some surprising ways.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great sensitve drama!! June 2, 2014

Contrary to the write up on this movie, it is not a comedy! It was a well done ,sensitive drama about navigating relationship changes as a result of medical issues with a brain injury. Acting was great, and the script was well written.

4.0 out of 5 stars Maxine Peake Shines March 29, 2014

Maxine Peake is brilliant, as always. As one critic said in her review, you can't take your eyes off her. What a shining performance!
Also, this film is an original (to my knowledge) concept and a very interesting one..

3.0 out of 5 stars Run and Jump disappointing June 27, 2014

Well acted by all involved but too slow moving and frankly a bit boring. The main character played by Ms Peake was delightful, the other characters lifeless and hard to engage with, the whole plot moved at a funereal pace and I forced myself to watch it 'til the end, wouldn't recommend it

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Effort, but... June 25, 2014
Format:Amazon Instant Video
...it dragged. This film has all of the components of what I usually enjoy in a film, so I can't quite figure out what it's missing that made it drag on for me. No synergy or connectedness among characters? I just don't know.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for me April 24, 2014
Format:Amazon Instant Video|Verified Purchase
This wasn't actually bad, but not my cup of tea. It ran along doing a lot of nothing as far as I'm concerned.
