Editorial Reviews

After her husband suffers a debilitating stroke, spirited Irish housewife Vanetia Casey (Maxine Peake, Silk) struggles to keep her family together in the wake of tragedy. Help comes in the form of American doctor Ted Fielding (Saturday Night Live s Will Forte), whose research grant for documenting the family s recovery process takes care of finances but also requires that the straight-laced doctor live with the chaotic Casey family for two months. Although Vanetia initially resents living under Ted s microscope, she soon finds comfort in his calming presence, while Ted grows surprisingly accustomed to Vanetia s dynamic, unpredictable personality. As the two explore their bond within their unique situation, they discover that a new family is beginning to take shape around them. Uplifting and authentic, Academy Award®-nominated* director Steph Green s RUN & JUMP is an unexpected, unconventional romance about human connection and the power of acceptance.

No need to summarize the rest of the story.

This film has all of the components of what I usually enjoy in a film, so I can't quite figure out what it's missing that made it drag on for me.

It was unique and heart warming, I would definitely recommend for everyone to watch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Contrary to the write up on this movie, it is not a comedy! It was a well done ,sensitive drama about navigating relationship changes as a result of medical issues with a brain injury. Acting was great, and the script was well written.

Maxine Peake is brilliant, as always. As one critic said in her review, you can't take your eyes off her. What a shining performance!
Also, this film is an original (to my knowledge) concept and a very interesting one..

The premise of this movie isn't quite as far-fetched as it might first seem. A young handsome father in the prime of life survives a debilitating stroke. Because this is such a rare recovery, an American doctor receives a grant to observe what happens when the man returns home to his family.

The American doctor does a good job of being dispassionate, videotaping the man and his struggles as well as the family and their efforts to reintegrate this new husband/father into their lives.

No need to summarize the rest of the story. However, this film, despite its unusual premise, does a good job of revealing the emotions of the wife, the children, the man's parents, and the "outsider."

The acting is superb. Yes, the movie does unfold slowly, but here, patience is rewarded with more than a glimpse into the lives of real people. It reveals the heart and soul of a family . . . and in the end, it made me want to embrace life with unfettered celebration.

This is not an easy film...certainly not your typical care-free Hollywood romantic comedy where the viewer expects a happy ending as the final conclusion. There is a lot that is happening in this film. It is an Irish-German co-production with mostly Irish actors and one American. Now, how weird is that? The movie is about a young family in the provincial town somewhere in Ireland. The husband suffers a stroke and is released from hospital under special surveillance/study made by a young American doctor whose specialty is neuro-surgery. The young wife has difficult time adjusting to a new life with a husband who seems like a child now, a very young daughter who seeks love and attention, a teenage son who has problems of his own, less than understanding in-laws, and a handsome yet very distant and shy stranger living with them whose responsibility is to teach the handicapped husband speak and live again...

I don't know what the title means or what it stands for. To me this film is about making the right choices while facing the difficulties of life. The story is very realistic and bittersweet. The ending is deep. The emotions portrayed by the actors highly believable. This is a first class European melodramatic-comedy.

Just how fluid is our definition of "family"?

Conor (Edward MacLiam) is an Irish carpenter who, at the age of 34, is unexpectedly felled by a stroke. Though he will never again be the man he was, Conor recovers sufficiently to allow him to return home to his wife, Vanetia (Maxine Peak), and two children. However, he is accompanied by Ted Fielding (a generally miscast Will Forte), an American brain specialist who moves in with the family so he can monitor and study Conor's condition on a 24/7 basis. While Ted, a single man without a wife or children of his own, is supposed to remain a neutral, emotionally detached observer of the situation, he finds himself more and more filling the void left by Conor, slipping into the role of father to the children and husband to the wife. Will Conor erupt in a jealous rage at this blatant disruption of his family unit, or will he have the grace to accept the fact that Ted can provide for his loved ones in a way that he himself no longer can?

Written by Ailbhe Keogan and Steph Green and directed by Green, "Run & Jump" is an unassuming, slice-of-life drama that is less about a man`s struggle to overcome the harsh hand that`s been dealt him and more about the effect that hand is having on those around him. How, the movie asks, does one re-establish a familial norm when the dynamics have effectively shifted and everyone`s role in that family has been essentially redefined? This relationship-shuffling manifests itself in some surprising ways.

Will Forte plays a doctor who travels to Ireland to stay with a family in disarray due to the husband suffering a stroke.

I'd love to be able to recommend this film because it's heartfelt, well intentioned, well acted, and well shot. But even more so because I've met Will Forte in person twice over the last four months and he's surely the nicest man in Hollywood. But unfortunately I can't. It just never comes to life and I wasn't pulled in by it no matter how much I wanted to be. Though I am happy to say that 13 out of the 14 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are positive, so other critics are seeing something in it that I'm not. Maybe I missed something here and should revisit it later in the year.

'Run & Jump' is now available in the comfort of your own home on Video on Demand.

Grade: C

Who is this movie for? Those who can appreciate a slow, quiet, heartfelt indie drama with a touch of romance, set in Ireland.
