Book Description

August 25, 2011

This book is not about running. It’s not even about dogs. It is, however, a little bit about poo, or rather, the mess we unnecessarily carry around in our own lives. Though Jennifer Luitwieler started running with one singular and significant goal in mind, to train The Dog to stop laying pipe under her sewing machine, she found herself running not just a half marathon, but away from the poo that she’d been unwittingly holding onto.

Approaching her 40th birthday, Jennifer thought running was stupid and running marathons was downright crazy. She thought the church had failed her. She thought she lacked worth because she couldn’t meet everyone’s expectations, let alone her own. She thought putting a writing career aside in favor of full-time mothering for over a decade meant she was no longer a writer.

At first, running was merely a training vehicle for The Dog, to keep his mess out of her house. Running stopped being about The Dog the day she realized she was stronger than she ever imagined, more capable than she had dreamed. Then running stopped being about Jennifer’s feet hitting the ground, eyes roaming the horizon. Running became space to think, to wonder, and to examine her own mess.

Down-to-earth, hilarious and thoughtful, this is a story of redemption told in a voice that is both deeply spiritual and slightly-irreverent. Anything but tidy and cliché, this wise and refreshingly-honest and hilarious book is about what it means to be human. Jennifer invites her readers to “Run With Me” as she chronicles a journey that is deeply inspiring: coming face-to-face with who we are, learning to value what we find within and calling forth the yet-unplumbed strength and potential that was there all along.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like talking to a friend! September 1, 2011
By AmyDi
Format:Paperback
As a rule, I routinely HATE the introspective, heal thyself, inner-strength kind of book. But NOT this one! This book has none of that hokey, inner peace, overly zen, kumbuya meditative nonsense.

The author approaches her writing the way friends would chat over coffee (or wine!) behind closed doors. She respects the fact that life is hilarious and messy and joyous and complicated and scary... and even sometimes a pain in the rear. She approaches her writing about all of this from a very real, very relateable point of view, managing to address the pain, joy and all the hard-to-describe in-between, day-to-day feelings from the perspective of us NORMAL people. You will find yourself spouting out loud "EXACTLY!" or "That's IT, yes!" when she hits the point right on the head, all the while thinking "I can't believe she wrote that!"...even though you probably think it every day!!

But the real beauty of this gem ~ aside from the liberally sprinkled, snort-out-loud, honest humor ~ is that it is NOT a "fix yourself" book (or a running book, thank God!)...It is a "STOP trying to fix yourself" book. It's a real perspective on real life, family life, community life, and the clutter that comes along with it.

An easy, enjoyable, and (yes, I'm going to say it) inspiring read! You'll be telling your friends!

5.0 out of 5 stars Running for your Life September 14, 2011
Format:Paperback
I've recently started running and although this book clearly states that it is not about running, I disagree. It may not solely be a book about the physical act of ensconsing oneself in lycra and hitting the trails, but it is definitely about running. It's about running your life with purpose. It's about deciding that you aren't defined by the limitations you've placed on yourself or by the limitations you perceive (often mistakenly) others have applied to you. It's about casting off the chains and shakles that bind us from seeing the truth about ourselves and others and running "the race that is set before us", free and unfettered.

This book is most definitely not a self-help book. It doesn't tell you "how to fix your life in 10 easy steps". It's more like listening to a dear friend tell you, openly and honestly (and with a healthy dose of humor), how she has dealt with real problems. In doing so, she challenges you to examine your own life, to be real and genuine in all of your relationships, beginning with the way you see yourself.

Either the author writes from a place of universally shared experiences and emotions, or she and I have been leading parallel lives for the past 40 plus years. I saw myself and my own emotions expressed in every chapter. I underlined and highlighted and starred numerous passages while mentally saying, "Yes! That is EXACTLY how I feel too." This book is introspective without being overly indulgent. It's humorous and sentimental all at the same time. It inspired me to run, both physically and emotionally, with purpose and with determination.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Be Intimidated By 'Running' in the Title! September 15, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I must admit, I was a little intimidated by the title since I'm not a runner. However, it was quickly apparent that this book is not about running, it is about a woman's journey to find herself (or re-find herself)--the running part was just the avenue she used to do it.

The book is written in a conversational and humorous way that makes it easy to read. I appreciated the author's honesty and ability to describe her struggles (the 'poo') and completely related to her.

If you've ever been in a place where you've felt overwhelmed, don't know who you are anymore, or even like you've lost your way in life, then this is a must read. You won't be disappointed.
