Lifesaver,
By A Customer
This review is from: Run For Your Life: A Book For Beginning Women Runners (Mass Market Paperback)
I have always had such a hard time sticking with any one type of exercise. I have always wanted to be a runner, but could never find a way to keep with it. Finally, a book which has completely changed my way of thinking about running! I have had so much fun running since I started using this book and I'm still committed!

Really great,

This review is from: Run For Your Life: A Book For Beginning Women Runners (Mass Market Paperback)
I have to agree with the previous reviewers about this book. The tone is completely coversational, making it a fun and easy read, compared to so many other training manuals, which read like text books. This book isn't about "run 5 miles on Monday and Wednesday with you heart rate at 80% of VO2 Max" -- how can anyone get motivated with that??? This book is about how to make running enjoyable and workable for you. It's motivational and "do-able." It makes running not only possible, but fun. For that reason, although it is aimed at the beginning runner, it is perfect for any runner. I highly recommend it!

Getting back on track,

What I think is so great about this book is that in addition to discussing the techniques and basics of running, it's incredibly motivational. I've been a runner for years. I know what to wear, where to run, etc... what I really need is help staying motivated. After reading Run for Your Life, for the first time I began to think about what running means to me not only physically but emotionally. The book guides you on how to make running more then just an exercise regime but a way of life.

Actually Makes Running Doable!!!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Run For Your Life: A Book For Beginning Women Runners (Mass Market Paperback)
This book is awesome! I actually had a chance to read a preview copy and decided, what the heck, why not try it? It made running so less intimidating to me...and what do you know, I'm running now! For the first time in my 34 years!!!! The book is great because it answered a lot of those niggly little questions I've always had but been too afraid (or ashamed) to ask, like those about pain, what to wear, and other questions too "feminine" for this review :-)!. The book gave me lot's of options for workout plans to fit my lifestyle and my goals, which also helped. But the thing that really made it for me was the writing style...totally conversational, non-threatening, easy and fun to read! I found myself laughing out loud a few times and was EASILY able to relate to stories and anecdotes. The quotes from the other women runners were very inspiritional, and there's a WEALTH of information in the back about suppliers, races, web sites...you name it! If you are someone like me who never thought they could run, give this book a read...you'll see it's not only possible, it's a lot of fun!

I ran for the first time in years!,

This review is from: Run For Your Life: A Book For Beginning Women Runners (Mass Market Paperback)
This book was recommended by a friend who I always ask about running, even though I don't do it. It was such an entertaining and inspiring read that I actually took my first (short!) run last weekend. Lots of books seem inspiring; this one really got me out there! It breaks running down into baby steps; makes it feel simple and accessible; and the tone is friendly and conversational, like talking to a girlfriend. You can't say that about many exercise books!Read it and go!!

When I first read this book I was truly a beginning runner if you could call it that...running on a treadmill but having no idea what I was doing. In fact, the idea of running scared me. And then I read Run for Your Life and realized that I actually could be a runner too. I started slowly and used each tip one or a few at a time...and now I really do consider myself a runner. After reading it 3 times already, I still find myself going back to Run for Your Life for helpful tips and reminders. Running and exercise is truly a decision/choice that you make...without being too mellowdramatic, my life has really changed because of the inspiration I have received from this book.

Hands down the best book for beginning runners,
By A Customer
This review is from: Run For Your Life: A Book For Beginning Women Runners (Mass Market Paperback)
This is hands down the best book for beginning runners on the market. Very motivational, full of easily accessible and helpful information, and some great humor too. And the tone is warm and personal and reads like good advice from your new best friend. I also love all the quotes from women runners that are peppered throughout (from ages 22 - 52). You feel like they're all part of it with you. What a great idea, solidly executed... the perfect launching pad for any woman who wants to start running. It'll get you out there and keep you out there for years to come.

I enjoy the book, alot! I enjoyed how she shared her personal experiences, making it more real for me to relate and not so technical. I also found the book to very motivating and inspiring. There's a few words of advise the author gave that I always think about when I run. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is beginning to run or considering running.

Solid advice but outdated & a little uninformed,
By Sui Solitaire (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Run for Your Life: A Book for Beginning Women Runners (Paperback)
I just got this book today and finished in an afternoon. While it was enjoyable, and a good start for a beginning runner, there were a number of things that I found troubling, such as the author's anecdote of how she ate nothing but junk food to power her marathon (after earlier chapters on how running = healthier bodies) and especially her views on hydration ("you can never drink too much water"). Unfortunately, in recent years, that has been proven gravely untrue-- runners, especially female ones, have collapsed or even died from drinking too much water on a run and not replenishing electrolytes instead (losing too much salt & overhydrating the body).
All in all, a solid & encouraging introduction to running for a beginner, but Reber doesn't go into detail of the more probing questions of running I had, which included hydration and when/how to eat (she discusses them in very light detail, but once again, her views seem a little uninformed). |
