4.0 out of 5 stars Basics.... Very Good Basics...To Begin A Running Program, August 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Run away From Fat (Paperback)
This book is wonderfully basic! I have started on the program and have only skipped one day - I'm on Day 24 - it's a real motivator. Easy to read, easy to keep up with the log, and easy to increase stamina. I think this book along with the Handbook by Glover is a great combo to get started on! I wish it had better detailed instruction on how to breath better while running and how to stretch-out better beforehand... but, altogether this book is a good book for beginner runners and the price is right too.

4.0 out of 5 stars A terrific, inspirational program!, June 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Run away From Fat (Paperback)
This is a great program for beginning runners. Lots of motivational tips and advice. The one problem I have is that he recommends running for 10 minutes to start. People who are very unconditioned may have trouble with this...I'd recommend that they walk 1/ run 1 like Bob Glover suggests in his book, until they can handle 10 minutes straight. Other than that, this is a very well-thought-out book. I'd recommend it to any beginner runner. I myself am on day 14 as of this writing. Wish me luck!

After many unfruitful attempts to persuade my wife to run, Ibought her this book. She has always hated running (scars from highschool track I suppose). Today, only about 40 days into the program, she and I are running 30 minutes/day. Even better, she's loving it. This is an awesome book. If you are ready to make a life change, buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific guide to running!, October 18, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Run away From Fat (Paperback)
I love this book. I could barely run two minutes without stopping, but somehow being told to run 10 minutes gave me the mental push to actually do it. I soon learned that the first 10 minutes are always the hardest. Once you get past those 10 minutes, your body is warmed up and your breathing becomes more relaxed, and you can go a lot longer. If you expect it to be easy, then maybe running isn't for you. But if you're serious about becoming a runner, this book is for you. Although I was close to 50 pounds overweight when I started the book, I was able to follow it religiously. I just wish he had another one for the next 90 days. I guess it's time for me to start his 4 hour marathon book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Start Running!, June 18, 2001

This book is so great! I was looking for a book that didn't start you out with a walk/run combonation (because i already did that). Instead I wanted a book that would start you running right away. I think this book was just what I was looking for. It takes you through each day and it gives you tips for each day and also acts as a running log. To those who are seriously out of shape right now I would recommend you start with even a smaller segment of time or try 10 minutes of walk/running first, because the first day you are suppose to run 10 minutes straight (which can be a little tough at first). I challenge anyone to give this book a try, it's really awesome!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not for the really unfit, February 9, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Run away From Fat (Paperback)
This book looks like a great plan to follow to get fit - if you're young, or fairly fit to begin with. On day 1, for example, you're supposed to run to 10 minutes. Well, if I could run for 10 minutes, I wouldn't need a book to get me in shape! If I could run for 10 minutes, that would probably mean running for more than a mile, since I can walk a mile in under 15 minutes.

The author, in the preface, explains that he came upon the running-keeps-you-fit realization while in graduate school, after having gained 7 pounds (horrors!) over the course of a semester. So, if that's the kind of weight problem you have, this book is probably great. But if you're middle aged, have been inactive for years, and have a weight problem that's a little more like that of mosy Americans looking fro diet books, this book won't work until you get a lot fitter first.
