Runaway Heiress,
By
This review is from: Runaway Bride (Mass Market Paperback)
To avoid being forced into marriage, Jennifer flees her odious guardian, who is also her uncle. This regency novel was a hit back in the 70s but seems rather run-of-the-mill now. I much prefer the witty historical romances by Georgette Heyer. I recently re-read the 1973 Wicked Guardian by Elsie Lee. It has a remarkably similar plot but with a more engaging heroine. The Runaway Bride by Holt has just lost its space on my bookshelf.

Runaway Bridge by Jane Aiken Hodge (Fawcett Regency Novel),
By
This review is from: Runaway Bride (Mass Market Paperback)
Description from the book back cover:When tempestuous, red-haired heiress Jennifer Purchas was informed by her uncle she was to marry a stranger, she exploded. Years of pent-up resentment broke through in that moment, for her guardian uncle had made life miserable enough. And now this. To be forced to wed some odious fortune hunter. Never. Jenny fled, and took a position as companion to the formidable, old Duchess of Lewes. The Duchess suspected Jennifer was no ordinary young lady. And so did her grandson, handsome young Lord Mainwaring, who found Jenny's charms very disturbing. As for Jenny, how long could she keep her identity a secret? How long before her uncle's spies would discover her? Runaway Bride - a truly delightful romp through 19th-century England.
