Pleasant, but not up to Heyer's standards,

This review is from: The Runaway Debutante (Kindle Edition)
I read this because it was recommended to me as "if you like Georgette Heyer, you'll like this". I liked it okay, but it's not nearly as good as Heyer at her best; it's not even as good as Heyer at her most mundane.
The story has a remarkable number of plot holes in it, including some historical anachronisms. If you ignore them, then the book is well-written and reasonably enjoyable. Once the hero and heroine get themselves married, there are a couple ridiculous "reasons" why the book can't come to its happy ending faster than it gets there. The female characters (except for the female villain) seem to sway back and forth between being competent and being completely silly; I found this annoying. The hero is somewhat more solid, but not really very interesting. It's better than a lot of romance novels, by far, but it isn't anywhere nearly as good as I was led to expect, and did not inspire me to seek out more by this author. |
