Book Description

8 and up3 and upThe Doll People

Best friends Annabelle Doll and Tiffany Funcraft are back, and this time they’ve got an unexpected visitor, a new doll named Tilly May. She's arrived in a mysterious package from London, but  her face looks so familiar... .  Could she be Annabelle’s long lost baby sister? Annabelle is convinced it absolutely must be so—but her parents refuse to believe her. With time running out before the package is at risk of being sent back to England, Annabelle and Tiffany resort to the only course of action they can think of—running away. But life on the road is fraught with its own pitfalls, from a foreboding wooded park to a close call in a department store. How will Annabelle and Tiffany find their way back home…and what’s going to happen to Tilly May if and when they do?

In this masterfully plotted third book in the Doll People series, Ann M. Martin and Laura Godwin, with the help of Brian Selznick’s captivating black-and-white illustrations, take the reader on another exhilarating adventure from a doll’s-eye view.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3–5—A mysterious package addressed to Grandma Palmer's grandfather arrives at the Palmer home while they are on vacation. Kate's doll, Annabelle, and her sister's doll, Tiffany Funcraft, deduce that the package contains the Doll family's missing baby. They open the package to find that Matilda is indeed Annabelle's lost sister. But how do they keep the family from sending her back? Since the package is not addressed to the Palmers, they might not open it, and the baby will be lost forever. Annabelle decides the only solution is to run away with her new sibling to save her from this fate. Annabelle, her brother Bobby, Tiffany, and her brother Bailey join the adventure and find themselves lost in the woods and then trapped in a toy store. The adventure takes a dangerous and mysterious turn when dolls begin to disappear from the store each night. The story opens with Selznick's 12-page illustrated, wordless prologue, and his art moves the story along throughout the book. This fun, magical entry in the series is just as engaging as the previous books.—Debra Banna, Sharon Public Library, MA

From Booklist

Annabelle Doll is thrilled to discover a five-year-old sister doll, Tilly May, in the mysterious package that arrives just as her owners, the Palmers, leave on vacation. This new member of the Doll Family, though, might put Dollkind in jeopardy. Unwilling to part with her newfound sister, Annabelle runs away, taking her friend Tiffany Funcraft and Tilly May with her. This intriguing premise sets up the action in this suspenseful addition to the Doll People series. Selznick’s numerous, softly-shaded pencil drawings, some extending across two pages, greatly enlarge the story. This sequel can be read on its own, but fans of the series will welcome the references to earlier adventures and the nail-biting return of Mean Mimi. Gentle humor, believable characters with distinct personalities, and a strong plotline will keep readers coming back for more. Grades 3-6. --Kathleen Isaacs

5.0 out of 5 stars Runaway Dolls, November 8, 2008
This review is from: The Runaway Dolls (The Doll People) (Hardcover)
I was so pleased with this book, the third of the series. I had read the first book and could not find the second. I tried to hold off but it was too tempting. I bought these books for my granddaughter and was so delighted. I purchased 2 more copies for gifts.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best of the Three, November 2, 2008

This review is from: The Runaway Dolls (The Doll People) (Hardcover)
I was not impressed with the second book as the first and was fearful for the third. I could not have been more wrong. In my opinion, it is the best of the three.

The novel starts out with wonderful illustrations explaining what happened to the "real" sister of Annabelle Doll. The package makes its way back to the Palmer's where adventure ensues. In order to keep Tilly May safe Annabelle runs away with her friend Tiffany. The adventures that follow capture what it would like to be a doll in a very big world.

If you have read the first two The Runaway Dolls is a must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just as fun as I'd hoped, January 18, 2009

This third book in the series begins with a wonderful premise. A very very old package is found in an old toy store, and an honest person mails the Victorian package as it was addressed. As a result, the baby doll which has been missing for more than 100 years arrives to join the doll family!!!

Once again, the children in the two doll families (one family of antique Victorian dolls and one equally special family of plastic "Funcraft" dolls) show courage and spirit, taking risks that the adult dolls feel are unwise. The girls' heart-versus-head approach gets them in deep trouble, but in the end leads to a truly happy ending. Love and bravery conquer all!

This gorgeously illustrated story will become a beloved family classic. Highly, highly recommended!
