As a child, this was one of my favorite books. I loved the idea of running away if I was spanked for being naughty, as Marie Louise does in this book. Marie Louise, a mongoose, visits several other species of mothers in her search for a new mother. After consulting the mysterious star-spangled Witch Toad (my favorite character) she discovers that her own mother is running away, too. They decide to return to their thatched hut in the sugar cane field together. This ending appealed to me in a variety of ways. Marie Louise discovers that her own mother is the best, after all. When I was six, it was hard to believe that at times, but "Runaway Marie Louise" helped me realize that your parents will still love you even when you're naughty. Maybe I should have read this book as a teenager, too. Marie Louise's mother says, "It would be lonely with no one to love and care for." That applies to everyone. We all desire solitude, but after a time crave loving companionship, and someone to "make a fluffy, puffy omelet" for us.

This was one of my favorite books growing up! The illustrations are adorable and filled my head with thoughts of faraway places. I liked to imagine what a peanut butter and jellyfish sandwich (like Marie Louise eats) would taste like, and being an animal lover, I loved seeing the many parents and their families that the little mongoose encounters on her journey to find a new Mama or Papa. Also has a very sweet ending!

Runaway Marie Louise is an excellent story to use when introducing story mapping to students. The little mongoose travels to several memorable sites with alliterative names and characters, finally ending up at home. Students can map out the story illustrating the boggy, soggy swamp and the squirmy, wormy spot creating an attractive and informative summary of the story.

There is no way to discribe when a child falls in love with a book - and this one was my daughter's. She read it over and over again and cried. She loves this book and requested it for Christmas this year because her other one fell apart. That is the best review I can give.
