4.0 out of 5 stars Cute variation
This story is a cute variation of The Gingerbread Man with a Spanish twist. My students enjoy reading the story and comparing it to The Gingerbread Man. My only problem with this book is the use of the traditional name for a donkey. It makes it hard to share with children because they don't understand that that word has another meaning. I wish the author had just used...

This book could've been good - but for my purposes of supplying books to classrooms, it does not work because of the use of the word "jackasses". It's also much too long for young students.

As a Pre-K teacher in Texas this story is a favorite in my classroom every year during our Gingerbread unit. We read different versions of the Gingerbread story and compare and contrast them. After reading The Runaway Tortilla we eat real tortillas, my students usually like those far more than Gingerbread :)

I used this book as part of a "Gingerbread Man" unit with preschoolers. It was one of their favorite versions that we read. They loved singing along with the tortilla as she rolled all over town chanting, "Run as fast as fast can be. You won't get a bite of me. Doesn't matter what you do. I'll be far ahead of you." It was a good story for comparing and contrasting characters and for discussing setting and plot. We made homemade tortillas after reading cutting them into the shape of gingerbread men with cookie cutters. The kids LOVED making and eating them!!
I did edit the language in a couple of places as we were reading. The author refers to the donkeys as silly jackasses which I read as silly donkeys. At one point the tortilla says, "Not I." "How stupid do you think I am?" I felt like this language was not appropriate for 4-5 yr olds. It was easily changed, however, since I previewed the book before chosing to read it to this age group. I would definetly recommend this book to others.

I bought this book because it was suggested to me as a book that I could compare to The Gingerbread Man around the time we complete the theme of Texas. It is well written and perfect for the Pre-K to kindergarten student. The book arrived torn, and Amazon reimbursed me for the book and the return postage. Unfortunately, when I reordered the book, the price had increased, and I was not reimbursed for the difference in price.
