4.0 out of 5 stars Avril Does What She Does Best, May 13, 2008
This review is from: Runaway (MP3 Download)
If you want to know what Avril is all about, listen to this song, you'll get her drift, her themes, her music, her language. And even though it's by no means original, she does a darn good job at it, for the most part.

The song is about her teen angst, losing herself, running away, freedom, all that typical teen music jazz. So, already, she's limited her audience, which it already is anyways. This song will only appeal to fans of Avril, and teens. Everybody else, pay no mind, go back to, "Keep Holding On."

Where she really gets you in this song though is its upbeat happiness, catchiness, and just its Avrilness. It's something you have to hear to get, and even then. Not saying the song doesn't do its job, it does, it's just not the best of jobs anyways. Teen angst has been covered I think.

Which leads me to the language, another thing that seems to be typical Avril now. Although its not as bad as her other stuff, she throws in hell just because she's not meeting her quota. It doesn't fit at all, and it's in the chorus, which is even worse. She also says, "Life can be a bi*ch." So take what you want about that, but really, she reminds me of Shia's character in I-Robot. You know, that kid who was really bad at cussing? That's Avril all the way, defiant, and bad at cussing.

Overall, an energetic, happy, upbeat teen angst song, that's been done more than a few times, but Avril always adds herself to it, and somehow it turns out okay. A typical Avril song, take it or leave it. But the more I hear songs off this album, the more she's growing on me...
