Bizarre deaths are occurring in London. A pair of elderly, eccentric police detectives supect ad-man Harry Buckingham, the estranged son of one of the victims. To prove his innocence, Harry reluctantly joins forces with mohawked, befeathered Grace, driver of the van that killed his father, to track the video store buyout his father had opposed. Meanwhile, a librarian delves into occult texts to decipher the angular symbols found on some victims. Eventually, all arrive at one conclusion: the multinational ODEL Corporation is using modern technology to transmit coded runic messages to the public, and will go to any length to enforce its scheme of a new, improved humanity. While there isn't much substance to hero Harry, other characters are delightful; the deliberate--and deliberately cantankerous--detectives; the sergeant who calmly ignores their role-playing and keeps them on track; feisty, forward Grace; and Dorothy, the librarian who deals with magical mumbo jumbo in down-to-earth fashion. Rune brings black magic into the video age with excitement and suspense.

Christopher Fowler was born in Greenwich, London. He is the multi award-winning author of thirty novels and ten short story collections, and the author of the Bryant & May mystery novels. His first bestseller was 'Roofworld'. Subsequent novels include 'Spanky', 'Disturbia', 'Psychoville' and 'Calabash'. His books have been optioned by Guillermo Del Toro ('Spanky') and Jude Law ('Psychoville'). He co-founded Creative Partnership, a company that changed the face of film marketing, and spent many years working in film. His memoir of growing up without books, entitled 'Paperboy', was highly acclaimed.
He has written comedy and drama for BBC radio, including Radio One's first broadcast drama in 2005. He writes for the FT and the Independent on Sunday, Black Static magazine and many others. His graphic novel for DC Comics was the critically acclaimed 'Menz Insana'. His short story 'The Master Builder' became a feature film entitled 'Through The Eyes Of A Killer', starring Tippi Hedren and Marg Helgenberger. In the past year he has been nominated for 8 national book awards. He is the winner of the Edge Hill prize 2008 for 'Old Devil Moon', and the Last Laugh prize 2009 for 'The Victoria Vanishes'.
Christopher has achieved several pathetic schoolboy fantasies, releasing a terrible Christmas pop single, becoming a male model, writing a stage show, posing as the villain in a Batman graphic novel, running a night club, appearing in the Pan Books of Horror, and standing in for James Bond.
His short stories have appeared in Best British Mysteries, The Time Out Book Of London Short Stories, Dark Terrors, London Noir, Inferno, Neon Lit, Cinema Macabre, the Mammoth Book of Horror and many others. After living in the USA and France he is now married and lives in King's Cross, London.

This is a good book. It had it all, a great story, good characters, wonderful action and a quick pace. This is just a good old exciting book. The author peppers the book with plot twists that keep the reader on his toes. This author writes in a way that is tight and slick that keep you interested through out. This is a solid murder mystery. Ok, so the detective that is used is straight from central casting, but that book is not bad. The story comes together and you believe it. I would have liked a bit more depth on the locations and characters, but not a bad read

First read this upon it's initial release when I was in high school and absolutely loved it. Horror, action, ancient mysteries, occult, plot twists- I couldn't put it down. Then I forgot about it. 12 years later I was recently going through some boxes at my mother's place and found an old, tattered paperback entitled 'Rune'. So what did I think after re-reading? Well... still lot's of fun but... the characters are, unfortunately, incredibly stereotypical. The two detectives on the case are older gentlemen and one of them is about to retire. Whoa, original. And the protagonist's girlfriend is so stereotypically, frigidly perfect that it is a wonder he sees anything in her at all. I'd have killed her myself. Anyway, still an engrossing read, but I certainly see flaws now that I didn't as a kid.

This is what I call a proper mistery book. Gripping reading and good timing of each occurrence, psychology of main characters is detailed enough to provide credibility to an overall rather far-fetching theory.
