Garbage. Wish I could give zero stars., August 18, 2009
This review is from: Rune Factory Frontier: The Official Strategy Guide (Paperback)
I have never purchased a worse video game guide than this one. There are no dungeon maps. There are no birthday lists. There are no likes\dislikes\best present lists. The character schedules are often wrong. If you're looking for a particular item drop, you need to read through the entire bestiary list until you happen across the monster that drops the item--there is no useful list by item. There are no recipes for food, weapons, accessories, or potions. Need to find a certain fish? Tough luck; there are no fish location lists. Want to make sure you see all of the optional events? Well, you better make sure you read through the whole event section ahead of time because the events aren't written about in calendar order. And don't even think about looking here for help managing prosperity with runeys...this newest rune factory twist is only pathetically mentioned in a couple paragraphs. You're MUCH better off looking for answers and guidance from the internet than from this guide.

An OK guide, August 5, 2009
This review is from: Rune Factory Frontier: The Official Strategy Guide (Paperback)
I bought this guide mostly for the pictures and it is pretty. However, it could have been better organized with more features. First, the likes, dislikes, and birthdays of all the villagers should be given. No, my character may not marry them, but it is nice to have, especially when you are trying to advance a special mission. Second, the segments on the caves were confusing. They read just fine when I flipped through the guide the first time, but for quick reference when I was playing the game they were less than helpful. There weren't any maps either, and that would have been especially helpful when you're stuck in a dungeon being bludgeoned by a troll and you cannot find the exit. Third, there are errors in the text and the pictures. Not many, but enough to make a person notice. For example, Annette's profile cuts off mid-sentence. Later, there is a missing picture and the document link is in the book.
Despite these faults, it has been useful. The detailed schedules of all the characters were nice to have so you were not running all over town in a fruitless effort to find someone. The heroine senarios, the requirement for marriage, were also helpful, especially in Bianca's case, where her senario can start before she even gets to town. And yes, the screen captures and illustrations were nice to look at and often made explanations in the text clearer.
So, in short, a useful but flawed guide that is nice to have on hand especially if you are tired of reading guides on the internet.

Rune Factory Frontier: The Official Strategy Guide, August 25, 2009
This review is from: Rune Factory Frontier: The Official Strategy Guide (Paperback)
I have to admit that I am disappointed when I got the volume. The game itself is very rich and has many facets, however the Official Guide has not dealt with many of the aspects. If I was just using this guide, without consulting the numerous other online free resources, I might not be able to go through the game. There is no map at all on any of the dungeons. There is some description in this book about how to get to the next level down, but without the maps, it is just not the same. The most useful part of the book is the chart that tells you where to find each character. The graphics are quite pretty though.
