The most disappointing thing (possible the only disappointing thing) about this DVD is the last of the series. I was desperately hoping there would be just a little bit more. Rune Soldier Hasn't received the publicity that other recent releases have, yet it has turned out to be the best comic series of the year. It's tale of a young magician who would rather be bar-fighting and his female friends - all of which are more competent than he is.
Louie is just as likely to cause a disaster as he is to do something heroic. When the priestess Melissa discovers that she has been assigned to Louie (who is to be her 'champion') she becomes embroiled is a series of adventures crying all the while "This is against my will." Accompanying them is Merrill, a greedy thief, and Genie, a tough mercenary who has turned to a live of adventure. These and the rest of the endearing cast, as 'Slayers' did several years before, that humor and fantasy work well together.
The first episode has the team coming together to get Merrill through a cold. Melissa volunteers to cover Merrill's jobs and sets a record for number of times fired during a day. Louie to the rescue, with surprising results for Melissa. The remaining episodes have Louie doing what he is supposed to do - helping to stop a revolution that threatens the peace of Ohfun. Suddenly we see another side to our adventurers as they gel into a haphazard, but effective fighting force.
Well, we knew from the beginning that things would work out, but creator Ryo Mizuno has found a new way to underscore several old messages in the process. Without being the least bit overbearing. The viewer is left no alternative but to smile warmly and hope that somehow there will be a second season some day.

This is the most amusing anime I've ever seen. It funny and has a heroic quality. The character development is amazing. I've never seen a series where the characters seem to grow and have such good interaction. The downside is the 6th volune leave you hanging. As a previous reviewer said it appeared to be canceled after one season. I would buy a second season of Louie and friends. I'd recommend this series as a buy!

A right and fitting ending, but, but...and that is why I gave it 4 instead of 5...that feeling of "but"

I thought the negative review of the ending needed a counterpoint.

*Spoiler* ahead. Turn back now.

Louie and company bring down a magic shield by repeatedly punching it. Stupid? But what makes a magic shield so great that repeated blunt physical attacks can't weaken its protection and break it?

Firstly, Louie did try magic. He must have cast his most powerful spell, but it did nothing. Why didn't he try again? Didn't Louie say that magic is mentally draining in an earlier episode. Maybe that shield is strongest against magical attacks? Seems Louie has thought this through. But surely he has something more powerful, isn't there a "great" spell that an "apprentice" magician has the necessary ability to cast?

How about using a weapon? Oh, wait, he gave his sword to the prince earlier. How about hitting it with his wand? Wait! Hitting it with his wand!? Flashback...hitting a goblin with his wand...breaking his wand...need a new wand---bad, very bad. Wow, another mature decision by Louie. Also, Genie and Merril broke their weapons on the shield, no one had any weapons left.

Perhaps Louie did show signs of maturity by recognizing this fact---the shield was created by a magical bracelet with limits to its strength and power. Louie tells his opponent that the shield is only borrowed magic.

Or maybe it was all desperation, nothing left to try but punching it. But darn if Louie is going to quit. The others join him...maybe out of fustration or they believe in his decision.

And then we have Louie's last punch and its consequences which awaits those who watch this last dvd.

Another comedy fantasy is Gokudo.

This is one of the best comic animes I have ever seen & rivals Ranma 1/2 in my book. And as many others have said, the only disappointment about it is that the series is not complete & seems to have ended after the first season.

I stuck with the series from beginning to end. It was an interesting ride to say the least. The one star rating doesn't reflect how I feel on the series as a whole, just this final installment.

What this anime had going for it was an interesting party of characters, a few inside jokes (why don't you try sleeping with him) and a beautiful use of color that made the real world seem dull and lifeless.

The problem I had with Rune Soldier is the Rune Soldier. (SPOILERS)

We see Louie first join the party, go on many adventures and find out the secrets to a conspiracy that threatens the entire kingdom he is a part of.

Everyone is a player in this conspiracy, teachers, and fellow adventuerers.

He thwarts the enemy's plan to incorporate a dragon into the rebel army which would ensure victory and overthrow the current government and he does this in a very humorist way. Then in the final battle, the villian is protected by a magical shield preventing Louie from finishing his mission. Does he use some great spell to show the audience he's grown as a magician? Does he find a weakness in the shield spell and exploit it? No...all he does is punch. He punches the shield over and over and over again. He punches to the point where his friends start punching too. Until their gloves are shredded off, and their knuckles are bruised and bloody; they punch until finally the shield collapses. So rather than an epic ending that would have shown me Louie learned something or ANYTHING from his travels. I get to see not only his own personal reinforcement that his fists can solve any problem big or small, but also his ability to retard his friends and bring them down to his level.
