Bury Tomorrow has been my favorite metalcore band since the release of Union of Crowns in 2012, so I was highly anticipating this new album. If you liked Union of Crowns you will also like Runes because all the best elements are still present - a good mix of clean and rough vocals, catchy melodies, and heavy riffs. Runes expands on Union of Crowns with more technical guitar work including solos without disrupting the flow of the songs and the screamed vocals are improved as well. The overall feel for the album is heavier but as stated earlier the melodies are still there and to me what sets this band apart. The lyrical themes are interesting as they tie in to different ancient runes, giving the album a loose concept-album feel. The bonus edition is worth purchasing, as the bonus track Hail the Lost is one of the better tracks on the album, and the acoustic version of The Torch has an interesting stripped down sound.

A very good album from a great band. Bury Tomorrow doesn't do anything revolutionary here, but what they do - solid no-frills metalcore - they do as good as anyone in the business. I personally liked Union of Crowns better - this time around the lyrics seem a little clunkier, and fewer songs really grab a hold of me. The guitar work's taken a step forward, though, which some people might appreciate more than I did, and "Shadow, a Creator" and "Last of the Ice" are standouts for me. Bottom line, it's probably not their best work, but it's still really good. If you liked their other albums, it's definitely worth buying.
