Book Description

December 5, 2007
In the tradition of literature's most memorable idealists comes Joseph Cahan, Buffalo, New York's biggest dreamer and 2001 college graduate. But, in the nine months that follow Cahan's graduation, his idealism will be put to the test. Through an obstacle course of humor, heartache, relocation, tragedy, and professional frustration, Cahan must find out if the "real life" he always expected is even attainable anymore. But, if so, how and where? As he finds his way, follow Cahan on his amusing and arduous search for refreshing certainty in the uncertain times of Generation What's Next.

I thoroughly enjoyed this author's first novel. Being from the Western New York area and having moved away, made me long for my birthplace. The characters were interesting and believable. I hope to read more from Michael Farrell in the future.

Good time, great read January 4, 2008
This is a great novel for you if you're either A. now living somewhere in the world that is not your hometown; B. from Buffalo, New York; or C. approaching or have experienced the ol' quarter-life crisis. For Buffalonians, we're a rare breed, but Farrell conects with our overlooked story of frustration pretty well. Buffalonians are some of the most fiercely loyal locals anywhere, but rarely get credit for anything other than snow and chicken wings; this book tries to correct that. For those currently in their 20s and screwed with confusion--no matter where you're from--Farrell covers those thoughts, too. Just the right book at the right time for me, so I have nothing but praise for this book and Michael Farrell. Good stuff.

The story of today's generation of ADD-addled young adults has been told too many times since the year 2000. I wouldn't have picked up this book if I thought, instead of a sprinkle, this was the main substance of it. But, a story to dispel the idiotic perception of a region of residents so maligned in popular discussion, written off as ONLY a community of frozen chicken wing lovers who suffer through endless winters and tragic sports franchises? I'd read that, so I did--and loved it. Farrell not only tells the story of a confused and idealistic Buffalonian in his early 20s searching for meaning in a life with conflicting wants and necessities. He exudes the passion this area's displaced natives and residents have for a beautiful, welcoming, and historic region unfairly known to the rest of the US as a punch-line for snow jokes and Super Bowl losses. In this novel, many non-Buffalonian will have the chance to see a little of their own hometown in Buffalo, New York, and this can only be good for the reader. Everyone should be so lucky to have a hometown like Buffalo. After you read this book, you may delightfully agree.
