This collection of essays -- yep, you guessed it -- have everything to do with running, eating and thinking -- mostly a combination of all three. Almost all of the essays are well-written and provocative. They're sometimes unexpected, too.

I have been a vegan for a long time, and have read a lot of vegan books; many of them, especially when the content is related to health and/or personal transformation, my eyes nearly roll back in my head from all the hyperbole and outright bull****. This book is a breath of fresh air. There's an essay by a long-time, young-ish vegan who has cancer (CANCER?! VEGANS CAN'T GET CANCER BECAUSE VEGANISM CURES ALL DISEASE?!)--a talented, professional runner, too. There's an essay from a vegan who is overweight, after a long commitment to plant based eating, and comes to accept her body after years of struggle. There are miraculous stories of weight-loss. The whole gamut. I loved nearly every minute.

The essays are beautifully written, inspirational and life-affirming. I admire the fact that these essays, sometimes painfully, hammer home the idea that veganism is not a panacea. It's a practice -- a way for humans, at every meal, to respect those with which we share the planet; by being vegan, we respect ourselves, too. The editor, Martin Rowe, ends the book with a piece about a famous vegan (who's, of course, a runner) who dies of a heart attack while running in New York City -- not as a cautionary tale; it's a meditation on life, the fleetingness of it, and how we don't know everything. Veganism is not the antidote to death. I respect the fact that many of these essays actually leave questions unanswered.

I am giving a false impression of the book, as though it's all death, negativity -- and, thankfully, it's not.

I absolutely love this anthology. Such personal and inspiring stories shared. I love reading many of the contributors journeys and motivation in becoming runners. For me, who is new to running, I'm starting to see some of the benefits: freer thinking, deeper concentration, a bit more confidence. I cannot recommend this book enough.
