Book Description

April 2005
"Running -Getting Started" will take anyone, at any level of fitness, into the running lifestyle. Jeff Galloway, a US Olympian in 1972, has helped over 150,000 people make this journey while reducing or eliminating aches, pains, and injuries suffered during most training programs. Jeff developed the Run-Walk method of training, in which Running is repeatedly interrupted by walk breaks, and offers a step-by-step program that is easy to use and easy to understand. Included will be lots of tips on nutrition, staying motivated, building endurance, shoes, stretching and strengthening and much more. Jeff Galloway, based in Atlanta, Georgia, was an average teen age runner who kept learning and working harder, until he became an Olympian. He is the author of the best-selling running book in North America and a Runner's World columnist, as well as an inspirational speaker to over 200 running and fitness sessions each year. Jeffs quest for the injury-free marathon-training program led him to develop group training programs in 1978.

4.0 out of 5 stars Running: Getting Started, July 21, 2005

This review is from: Running--Getting Started (Paperback)
This is the best book for beginning runners I have ever read.

It sets out a reasonable, attainable schedule for those who have never run before. It also gives good advice regarding nutrition and equipment.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in beginning a running program, especially first-timers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Realistic and Motivations, January 30, 2007

This review is from: Running--Getting Started (Paperback)
I have been a mid-level runner for a while (run for fitness and participate in some 5K's through the year but nothing more). When I became pregnant with my second child, I did not keep up with my running schedule and lost a lot of the endurance that I once had. As such, I was looking for a motivational tool to get back on track, as well as a fitness plan to get my body back into the shape that it once was.
This book did both for me: it kept my mind motivated to keep going, and it also set out a fitness/excercise plan that started slow and kept my body motivated. Galloway pushes hard on the idea of "slow and steady" vs. "hard and fast". Too many runners give up quickly because they try to go too fast too soon and they get burned out. Galloway covers all aspects of running for beginners and does a fabulous job with it. The chapters are short and there are nice color photos and check lists to keep the reading interesting. I rate it an A+ and an must have for any beginner runner or someone who has been out of the loop for a while and looking for some motivation to get back into the swing of things.

5.0 out of 5 stars I hate running, May 17, 2007

I thought that running was the most boring sport on the planet. I was more of a sprinter short term running sport person. For some reason I picked up this book and became enthralled by it. It made me understand the mechnaics of running and why Mr. Galloway loves it. To the point now where I run every other day, I look in the book to determine what I need to do before race day, what to eat etc. In essence love the book and I was not a runner until I read this book.
