4.0 out of 5 stars Running: Getting Started, July 21, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Running--Getting Started (Paperback)
This is the best book for beginning runners I have ever read.

It sets out a reasonable, attainable schedule for those who have never run before. It also gives good advice regarding nutrition and equipment.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in beginning a running program, especially first-timers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Realistic and Motivations, January 30, 2007

I have been a mid-level runner for a while (run for fitness and participate in some 5K's through the year but nothing more). When I became pregnant with my second child, I did not keep up with my running schedule and lost a lot of the endurance that I once had. As such, I was looking for a motivational tool to get back on track, as well as a fitness plan to get my body back into the shape that it once was.
This book did both for me: it kept my mind motivated to keep going, and it also set out a fitness/excercise plan that started slow and kept my body motivated. Galloway pushes hard on the idea of "slow and steady" vs. "hard and fast". Too many runners give up quickly because they try to go too fast too soon and they get burned out. Galloway covers all aspects of running for beginners and does a fabulous job with it. The chapters are short and there are nice color photos and check lists to keep the reading interesting. I rate it an A+ and an must have for any beginner runner or someone who has been out of the loop for a while and looking for some motivation to get back into the swing of things.

5.0 out of 5 stars I hate running, May 17, 2007

I thought that running was the most boring sport on the planet. I was more of a sprinter short term running sport person. For some reason I picked up this book and became enthralled by it. It made me understand the mechnaics of running and why Mr. Galloway loves it. To the point now where I run every other day, I look in the book to determine what I need to do before race day, what to eat etc. In essence love the book and I was not a runner until I read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth weighting for, December 2, 2007
This review is from: Running--Getting Started (Paperback)
As a former late 40's, near-obese person I have been having a great deal of success with this program, since starting in mid-November. Each week I see better results and have been able to do more running. My suggestion for anybody purchasing this book is to follow the program as written and not to try to do too much too soon. As a "want it now" society, we tend to neglect the importance of time with things such as weight loss. Be patient--it will happen! Happy running!

This is a great book. I started running again at 49 years of age and thought that I should just be able to go out and run, when it wasn't working well I was discouraged. After reading this book I have a whole new routine and feel great. Even have the right size and type of shoes. I have recommended it to several other people.

I had been trying to become a runner on my own but was unsuccessful. After reading this book, I discovered I was doing a lot of things wrong. Jeff Galloway's direct approach and positive writing inspired me to become consistent with my running program.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great advice for getting started with running!, November 29, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have been running for about three months now, and recently became interested in Jeff Galloway's training methods. I picked up a few of his books, including this one. Running: Getting Started gives the reader a thorough introduction to the sport of running and Jeff Galloway's "run/walk/run" approach. It covers a variety of important subjects, such as buying running shoes, how to start training, cross-training, nutrition, running form, dealing with different weather conditions, aches and pains, motivation, and running at different ages. There are many nuggets of wisdom and practical advice. The book is attractively presented with glossy pages and color pictures.

There are a couple of minor downsides and watch-outs. The writing style is a little clumsy in parts, but not to the point that it's distracting. It's also worth noting that this book is clearly aimed at the beginning runner. If you're more of an experienced runner looking for insight into Jeff Galloway's techniques or his advice on training for a race, you are probably better off buying Galloway's Book on Running or one of his books designed for race training (5K and 10K, half marathon, marathon, etc.)

I'm very happy I bought this book, and it has given me a lot of useful insights that I have been able to apply to my training. Jeff Galloway's training techniques are helping me run longer distances at a good pace WITHOUT feeling exhausted!

5.0 out of 5 stars I did NOT like running!, August 27, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I am 6'0" 285lbs. have had two knee surgeries and a reconstructive ankle surgery so I thought running would not be something for me. In fact, I hated running and was told by doctors I could never do it. I started off slow and by week three I am already running three miles during a workout. This book overemphasises taking your time and walk breaks which are much needed. I HIGHLY recommend this book. I have enetered in my first 5K race ever and plan to continue running and move towards the half marathon and eventually the marathon. GREAT BOOK!

4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful, April 1, 2011
By
The Queen (Yakima, WA, USA) - See all my reviews
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book contains helpful information for new runners. At age 50, in two months I've transitioned from desk-jockey to walk-run 8 miles without injury or pain, without much a dent in my schedule, and willing to do it again -in the rain-. This was surprising to me at about 20 pounds overweight and absolutely not a gung-ho athelete.

The material didn't seem especially well-organized, but then the author isn't a writer by trade either. Some of the statements I question the accuracy of, but there weren't many. That is the reason for only 4 stars.

Overall, the book was easy to read and understand and the recommendations have worked for me and my husband.
