I injured my knee during a half marathon in 2011 and haven't been able to get back into running since then. When I originally hurt my knee I went through many of the warnings the book talks about. This includes misdiagnosis, over prescription of pain medication, and ineffective physical therapy. When the inflammation in my knee woudn't go down I was actual given such a strong dose of a pain killer that I ended up in the emergency room. Until now I have pretty much given up running altogether, which has been sad because I love running so much. After physical therapy I was able to run for about 10 minutes at a time and play sports but they told me to forget about long distance running. After receiving this book from a great friend I am totally re-motivated to get back into running. This book is unlike anything I have ever found online while trying to research and fix my injury. Bruce Wilk truly knows what he's talking about and MOST IMPORTANTLY he is not just focused on rehabbing your injury but REHABBING YOUR INJURY SPECIFICALLY FOR RUNNING!!! Just from reading this book I learned that as a lifelong athlete I never truly learned how to run properly. I have learned great stretching and leg strengthening techniques unlike what I received when I paid over $300 for PT. This book is certainly a bargain and I can't wait to continue following it's guidelines so I can get back to running in a healthy manner. I highly recommend this book and I'm so happy I have been re-motivated to get back into the sport I love so much with the right tools to succeed!

Bruce Wilk has written the most comprehensive guide for such a broad category of injuries that I've ever read outside of a textbook. In many ways, it is superior to a textbook, as it provides practical, actionable advice to a broad audience.

While remaining written in a way that a lay-reader (the intended audience) can understand, the material is also great for professionals: it's evidence based with plenty of primary references. Going beyond simply explaining injuries, their prevention and management, are practical guidelines and images (which I particularly enjoyed) of self-treatment techniques and exercises. This adds tremendous value to the reader, and is likely exactly what people are looking for. A fair treatment of many trends in running - barefoot, for example - is also given. After reading this, one will be able to make informed decisions regarding their recovery. The book looks long, but much of this includes images and appendixes that help tremendously with carrying out the program.

A great reference for casual runners, elite athletes, and healthcare professionals alike. No doubt that this book will help many people overcome their injuries.

The Running Injury Recovery Program is a very thorough manual for runners. It takes a very individualized approach and should be a prerequisite for all high school and college track and cross -country coaches. Bruce Wilk takes you through a myriad of scenarios in the book and as an athlete you can both relate to the situations and also receive expert advice on the next step to take. If you are an injured athlete and your physician and/or PT is not a runner themselves then this is a must read. The therapist in me also believes that this book would serve as a great foundation for new physical therapy school graduates that have hopes of working with a running patient population. If you are currently seeing a therapist or trainer the accompanied Work Book could also help you as there are walk-through templates that are closely associated with symptoms and unique pathologies".

I read this book over the course of 2 months and I was really impressed with how thorough it is in identifying and treating running injuries. I have been a runner for over 10 years and have suffered my share of running injuries. And finding a good source (books, internet, doctors, etc) to treat injuries has never been easy. It's been my experience that when I see a physician about a particular pain, and I tell him I'm a runner, he gives me a diagnosis without even evaluating me. If you search the internet for help, the advice is too broad--they work for some, but not all runners. This is why I have found this book to be incredibly beneficial - you can use it to help you identify running injuries from other types of injuries, and shows you how to treat it by using effective Physical Therapy exercises. It also addresses the use of over-the counter pain medication which is usually a controversial topic in sports. The author himself is a runner with many years experience in physical therapy and extremely successful in his practice. As is the case with most runners, we inevitably suffer injuries. It's great to have this book to refer for running therapy. I highly recommend this book.

If you are looking for a quick fix, this is not for you. This book offers long term solutions for runners. It provides great comprehensive recovery programs to correct movement patterns that led to the initial injury. It is worth the investment!
