Book Description

March 2003
Sheppard Earl, a bail bondsman and Terrance Jones, a bounty hunter, work hand in hand with Shep bailing them out and Terry chasing them down. Both work round the clock, seven days a week facing financial and physical hardships that would challenge the best of men. The two depend on each other for their livelihood and it is only because of their strong friendship and loyalty that both are able to survive and prosper. Action, titillating encounters and courtroom drama fill the pages of this fast moving essay about America's least understood professions.

Editorial Reviews

Review

A remarkably well written story about crime, its root causes and our system of justice -- Faye Tilles, mother, dancer and actress

Engelman takes the crime fiction reader into the little known world of the bail bondsman... I Highly recommend. -- Bernard Whalen - Co Author Justifiable Homicide

Informative real-life drama that will touch your heart and soul. -- Edwin Schwartzman, docent, Baltimore Museum of Art

From the Author

With this work, my second published novella, I present a dramatic account of one of the least understood parts of our judicial system. The mysterious world of the bail bondsman and his bounty hunter agent, conjure up images of the early west at work in a modern-day world. Running from Justice, describes the legal process in a moving story of man's most basic instincts. Love, lust, loyalty and affection permeate the fibers of this must read novel about men and their passions. Easy reading in 12 point type.

More About the Author

I was born during WWII in London, England. My parents were Czech citizens running from Hitler. We immigrated to the United States in 1940 after surviving the London blitz. My first year in the U.S. was spent in a small rural town in Oklahoma where our sponsoring aunt and uncle lived. Another uncle in Baltimore invited us up to his more cosmopolitan city where our new lives really began.

5.0 out of 5 stars Likeable Reading, Likeable Characters, April 27, 2003

A friend recommended this book when I spoke of an interesting article in a recent New Yorker magazine about bail bondsmen and so I purchased it here at Amazon.com. I had planned on reading a couple of chapters before going to bed but instead read the entire book in an evening (late). It was very easy reading and the characters were interesting and likeable. I feel certain that they were based on real people that the author encountered in researching the book. This short novel provides an interesting insight into these fascinating underworld characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fugitives On The Run, June 18, 2003

Peter Engelman does a fine job of giving us insight into a world that most of us (hopefully) have little contact with. The book is an enjoyable, fast read. I would have preferred a full novel length...perhaps next time.

I truly enjoyed reading this fast-moving, rapid-paced novella. I can't wait to read the next book. The author writes with real enthusiasm and his descriptions help you to visualize the characters. Definitely a one-nighter! Can't put it down until you have completed the book!
