Book Description

December 29, 2005 Animal Guide

Running Mac OS X Tiger is the ideal resource for power users and system administrators like you who want to tweak Tiger, the new release of Mac OS X, to run faster, better, or just differently.

If you areready to dig deep into your Mac, this book expertly guides you to the core of Mac OS X. It helps you understand the inner workings of the operating system so you can know how to get the most out of it. And it gives you countless ideas--and step-by-step instruction--for customizing and revving up Tiger to your specific needs and your liking.

Completely revised and updated for Mac OS X Tiger, Running Mac OS X Tiger covers all the new features and functionality of Tiger. You can count on authors Jason Deraleau and James Duncan Davidson to give what you need--and not bother with what you don't. They don't spend time on Finder tips and keyboard shortcuts; they focus on showing you what makes a Mac tick and, more importantly, how you can make it tick just the way you want it to.

Easy to follow and intuitively organized, Running Mac OS X Tiger is divided into three parts: "Getting Started" introduces Mac OS X and explains how it's put together and why it works; "Administration Essentials" gives you the tools you need to examine how your system is running and adjust all the knobs behind its operation; and "Networking and Network Services" covers the ways Mac OS X interfaces with the world around it, including wireless and spontaneous networking. Developer Tools for Mac OS X, including Xcode, are discussed throughout the book as appropriate.

For the growing number of intermediate to advanced users who are ready and eager to customize Mac OS X, Running Mac OS X Tiger delivers everything you need to become master of your Mac.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth checking out, January 12, 2006
By
This review is from: Running Mac OS X Tiger: A No-Compromise Power User's Guide to the Mac (Animal Guide) (Paperback)
Besides being for the Mac Power User, this book would be a great to give to a Windows Power User who is new to the Mac. It skips most of the stuff you can figure out on your own (coming from Windows) and gets right into the things that make a Mac a Mac. All the stuff you would expect is in the book or, in the case that it isn't, it refers you to other books that do.

It does a good job as a reference book, it's not really a start to finish read. Definitely worth checking out if you're looking to move up from "beginner" Mac user or making a lateral move from Windows Power User.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learn How To Become A Mac Power User, October 18, 2006
By
This review is from: Running Mac OS X Tiger: A No-Compromise Power User's Guide to the Mac (Animal Guide) (Paperback)
'Running Mac OS X Tiger' by James Duncan Davidson is for those Mac users that want to get beyond simply surfing the Internet, writing some emails and moving files from one folder to the next. Written in an easy to follow manner, this book will take you from the basics of using the computer that you love so much and move on to the next level. From scheduling tasks to learning more about the filesystem to creating accounts and managing users, this book is a joy for anyone that likes to tinker around and learn new things.

Chapter Overview:

01. History
02. Installation
03. Overview of Tiger
04. Terminal and Shell
05. System Startup and Login
06. Users and Groups
07. Open Directory
08. Files and Permissions
09. Disks and Filesystems
10. Printing
11. Networking
12. Monitoring the System
13. Automating Tasks
14. Preferences and Defaults

Recommending this book is a piece of cake. This has the brevity that I desire, yet the dense writing that I also seek. The chapters are logically laid out, and it's a joy instead of a task to read through this text and play around. If you want to learn more about how to make your Mac a powerful tool, pick up this book, you will not be disappointed.
