Stunning jazz-rock/prog from 1972.,

Ray Russell is blazing on both lead guitar and bass. The rest of the band is great too. Absolutely stunning musicianship. If you like Clark-Hutchinson's first two albums, this is for you. I could listen stuff like this all day long and never get bored.

This review is from: Running Man (Audio CD)
The title is correct: the driving force behind "Running Man" is British guitarist, composer, producer Ray Russell, winner of ASCAP award for the most played music on American Television. However, it concerns mainly his work for TV dramas: "Plain Jane", "A Touch Of Frost", "Dangerous Lady", "The Jump" etc, etc.Ray Russell turned professional at the age of 16, at 21 he recorded his first solo album - "Turn Circle" (Turn Circle(which shows his musical prowess, but is too far from "Running Man"), and played with various British blues bands (Graham Bond Organisation and Georgie Fame among others). Apart from his short involvement with "Running Man", Ray Russell is highly respected professional, very much in demand as session guitarist and producer; the list of his "clients" looks like "Who Is Who in Rock/Pop" - Robert Plant, Cat Stevens, Phil Collins, Jack Bruce, Tina Turner... Anyway, "Running Man" was one album miracle, well ahead of its time (1972) and now it still sounds as a revelation, fresh and innovative. A fusion of hard rock, prog, free jazz, acid. I would say that somehow it reminds "King Crimson", but reaching the point of menacing hysteria of Clark Hutchinson (Free to Be Stoned-Complete Anthology. For this project Ray Russell assembled consummate musicians: Alan Greed (organ, piano and vocals), Alan Rushton (drums), Gary Windo ( tenor sax), Harry Beckett (trumpet & flugelhorn). "Running Man" was signed to "Neon" (prog-label of RCA UK), and in record time released their first and only concept album (built around the words of Lebanese-born prophet of counter-culture Khalil Gibran: "Your children are not your children, they are the sons and daughters of life'sw longing for itself"). This wonderful LP was (and still is) well above other big names, but perhaps the time was not right for it - it sold rather poorly. The album was previously bootlegged on "Akarma", legally released on "Repertoire" (in 1994), and now re-issued by "Angel Air". Don't miss the chance
