Content filled,

This review is from: Running Microsoft® Access 2000 (Paperback)
I'm probably 4.5 stars. The pluses are that this book covers a lot, esp. for something called "running access 2000". e.g. it covers a good amount of programming. It's also clearly written. My one critique is the examples, which are integral to the book. The book skips between three sets of examples. The examples have a lot of forms, and some can take some analysis. I would have prefered one example that was built up in a more consistent fashion, one one main example with other minor ones if essential. My minor critiques would be that (a) chapters are by listed techniques (e.g. Visual Basic Fundamentals) whereas a subhead (automating data entry) might have been as relevant.(b) I think he is least clear (or too terse) on designing a "good" database (like how to set up tables and relationships) (c) a "for more info" bibliography would be invaluable (e.g. a great VB book). Finally, and this is *not* a critique, just an observation, this book is NOT a reference (lord knows how many volumes a reference would take....)

The first step to become an Access developer.,
This review is from: Running Microsoft® Access 2000 (Paperback)
Running MS Access 2000 will teach all you need to know about how the software works. You will get to know the shortcuts, and how to make use of all the possibilities that lies within Access. Further, you will learn how to plan and execute the entire process involved in a database development project. This book will give you the knowledge to navigate your way around Access 2000, you will know in what direction to go to find the feature you are looking for. Included on the CD you will find lots of programming examples, but it is not a pure programming book, the emphasis is on the capabilities of the software, and how and where to make use of them. If you are new to database programming and/or Access 2000, I recommend this book so that when you have learned about the software you can focus 100 % on building your database, instead of trying to find out what Access can or can not do. By investing your time and money in reading Running MS Access 2000 and then a programming book (0078825121, 0672314843, 0782123716, 0735605009) you will be able to build your database system in the least amount of time, and in the process gaining a basic knowledge as the first step to become a professional Access developer.

Excellent coverage of Microsoft Access 2000,
This review is from: Running Microsoft® Access 2000 (Paperback)
After reading Mr. Viescas' previous book, "Running Microsoft Access 97," and learning a lot about this program, I was glad to see that he has written a similar book on Microsoft Access 2000. This book, while similar in style and content to the Access 97 book, reflects the upgrade that Microsoft has made to this program. As in Mr. Viescas' Access 97 book, this one takes you from the basics of Access and guides you gently through very complex, but practical, exercises. As with Access 97, I feel that I have mastered the basic concepts of Access 2000. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking to move from Access 97 to Access 2000 or to someone who wants to learn the program from "scratch."

Decent Primer but incomplete as a reference,
By David Revel (Redondo Beach, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Running Microsoft® Access 2000 (Paperback)
I have been dissappointed with this book. This book may be helpful to understand the tutorials on the supplied CDROM but does little to help expand one's skills beyond this basic level. I bought this book with the hope that I could use it as a reference to transfer my skills with other database management tools (FileMakerPro, FoxBase) to Microsoft Access. While basic concepts are covered in a tutorial style, I often found myself wanting a comprehensive function reference in order to move beyond the example databases in developing my own projects. Often, functions and concepts are listed without any indication of their syntax or how they are used...and many are simply overlooked.

Good beginners book.,

I received this book as part of the Microsoft Mastering Series... in this context it was a dissapointment. Generally, the book is good for anybody starting out, but for those that have done any programming work in Access at all then look somewhere else.

Poor Training Kit: Online Tutorial & "Running Access 2000",
By
This review is from: Running Microsoft Access 2000/ Mastering Solution Set (Training Kit) (Paperback)
The accompanying computer-based tutorial (not the books own CD) would be MUCH more useful in book format, so that single-PC trainees won't have to either split windows or frequently switch between Access and tutorial. The tutorial's content is cookbook -- and worthwhile for beginners like me. Once one finishes the tutorial, one quickly finds that the "Running Access..." book is clearly a reference and not a training guide. Unfortunately, the tutorial does not provide sufficient practice for the trainee to only need a reference book. Recommendation: For trainees, find a more comprehensive training resource. I'm now buying Alison Balter's "Mastering Access 2000 Development" book, wishing I had started there.

Running Microsoft Access 2000,
This review is from: Running Microsoft® Access 2000 (Paperback)
It's a very good book on Access. I have used all 3 versions (95,97, and 2000) and learnt lot from the books. The examples in the book are very useful but left some puzzls for readers to figuer out. If the author can write, or get somebody to write, a solution book or "student guide", to show readers how the example application were made (especially some tricky parts), it will definitely become a "5 stars +" book on Access.

This review is from: Running Microsoft® Access 2000 (Paperback)
This book is not meant to be the ultimate reference for access it did exactly for me what i expected. It got me started into the world of Access programming. It was long and did over explain a lot, but that was what i needed at the time. SO for me, it was perfect. As a bonus, when i was in a rut and i needed an answer i found the authors Email address in the book and he helped to steer me in the right direction a couple of times. Now I have moved on to more technical books about the Access world, but i am very thankful for the groundwork this book helped me to lay down.

The first book I grab when I have an Access ?,

I think this book does a pretty good job covering most questions. Its my primary Access reference and co-workers are constantly asking to borrow it. I don't know of a better Access book. I like the example databases. It lets you actually see what the author is describing in action. Its far too dull to read cover to cover, but its laid out well so you can turn to the section that answers your question and figure out what you need to do.

The best book on Access,
By A Customer
This review is from: Running Microsoft® Access 2000 (Paperback)
To teach an intermediate course on Access I had to read most of the Access books in the market. By far this is the best one as it takes the reader from the very basics to advanced programming in Visual Basic for Applications. Too bad that Mr. Viescas did not write the Access 2000 version.
