Great for beginers, not for deeper issues though..,
This review is from: Running Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 (Paperback)
My boss told me to "set up an NT server", I had worked with NT before, but never set one server up by myself. It is great for beginers and covers most of the first things you need to know. But when you covered the basics and go back for a reference a coupple of months later you will not find the depth you like. When i wanted to know how comressing a drive would affect the over all preformance it simply says:"We don't see the point of a server using compression with the price of a harddisk today". And that is not the kind of anwser i was looking for. so if you are a newbe, go ahead, if you wanta reference book, look for something else. But it is still a very good book.

An introductory text,

The book is an introductory text to Windows NT written in simple and engaging style. It introduces the basics, hardly deep enough to really run an NT server. Hence the low rating. It will not make NT system administrator of you. If you aspire to be one, Inside Windows NT Server is a book to read.

I just finished reading this book borrowed from Central Library, actually I still want to renew it, but another guy has booked it. Considering its one volume, it has covered from basic domain management to enterprise master domains trust. It's easy to understand with quite a number of graphics and illustration. It's a basic reference book on your bookshelf if you don't need too much in-depth knowledge of NT.

I thought the book was chock full of useful information. I started with a blank hard drive and a cardboard box full of software and with my keyboard in one hand and the book in the other I had my NT 4 Server up and running an Intranet Web home page on IIS 4.0 via my new Ethernet LAN in just a few days. This is a great book to buy if you are starting from scratch and you haven't yet decided to spend the extra money to buy the NT 4 Server Resource Kit.

Not the deepest, but easiest to understand,

Not as "in depth" as some others, but easy to read and understand. Outstanding for someone trying to get their network running because of emphasis on planning and doing things right from the first.

Great reference for first time administrators!,

Written in an easy to digest format. Most of the underworkings are discussed with clear descriptions and explanations. Good tips for newbie administrators to configure their systems. One disappointment: not enough discussion of command-line functions.

Good addition to a personal bookshelf if you are an aspiring MCP. The book does not really have any depth to it, but is is valuable as a handy reference. I wanted more detailed information than this book provided when it came to name / address resolution. Overall value is three and a half stars.

As an MCSE, is important to have adequate information and resources. Besides having the resource kit, an easy-to-follow guide is a must - this book pretty much gives you that. The only thing I didn't like were the ending chapters about TCP/IP and intergration.

Excellent Read,

For a technical manual, I had a hard time putting this one down. For anyone setting up a Windows NT Server, or who wants to better understand the network they have inherited this book is essential. It emphasizes planning and testing of the network before rollout, and gives good strategies for data protection and overall security. It is very readable and the authors do a good job of keeping the text flowing. My only complaint is that the later chapters on integrating the Internet are weak, and refer the reader too often to another text. The majority of the book is solid though, and enjoyable.
