Book Description

December 1999
Aspiring actress and part-time private investigator Fran Varady knew there would be maximum disruption when her friend Ganesh decided to modernise his uncle's newsagents, starting with the washroom. But she isn't prepared for the nightmare that begins when an agitated passer-by asks to use it: hours later, he's found stabbed to death, leaving a message for Fran to meet him, and a mysterious role of film hidden behind the old pipes...

From AudioFile

Nicole Arumugam's lively and finely nuanced reading puts the listener in the middle of the action in Ann Granger's edgy and entertaining British mystery. Aspiring actress and part-time (unlicensed) investigator Fran Varady lets an agitated visitor use the restroom in the corner store where she works. Hours later, the visitor is found murdered, leaving behind a mysterious roll of film and a message for Fran to meet him. Arumugam has a fine ear for the varied characters in the story--the old ladies, street kids, Indian merchants, snooty bluestockings, shady businessmen all sound just right. Her thoughtful timing also gives the listener the pause as a character silently climbs the stairs, the intake of startled breath, and the hesitation as one person waits for another to speak. A lovely performance and an entertaining story. A winner. A.C.S. © AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine --This text refers to the Audio Cassette edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting read, September 23, 2000
This review is from: Running Scared (Paperback)
This author has developed the Fran Varady character over three novels. Fran is a young, feisty homeless person who seems to thrive on being alone and a loner. The plotting here, as with earlier outings for Fran, involves the down and outs, the homeless and the poor of England. For something different to the usual can-do, superwomen of female-detective crime fiction, give this a try.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent crime novel, good audiobook, August 12, 2004

(VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
I prefer Kim Hicks' performances of Ann Granger's Fran Varady crime novels, because for me Hicks' voice perfectly evokes the shades of Fran's character. But Nicole Arumugam does a thoroughly professional reading here, bringing all the characters to life: Fran, Ganesh, Tig, even the dog. Another solid crime novel in the excellent Fran Varady series set among the struggling young in London.
