He found discarded food in the dumpsters at the end of the school day and washed in the locker room at night. He thought he had it all. But soon boredom and loneliness set in. He teased and stole from a classmate he admired but kept to himself. With summer nearing he realized his days at school were limited. Leaving, he begged for money and food and while crossing a street at night was hit by a truck. Neither knew it was mother and son. His mother's concern for a helpless boy led her to him. Finding him in a ditch, mother and son were reunited. It became a happy ending.

This is a very well written tale from first time author Maryjo Holland. It tells the story of Dirk, who gets in trouble for having a fight at school just before Christmas break. At home, he gets angry and thinks he's being punished when he sees no presents under the tree. So he runs away from home. And the only safe place he can think of to hide out is school. This is a quick story with some good lessons that young readers should enjoy, and that parents can feel good about their children reading.
