5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful debut for a wonderful young woman
I met Lily as she sang her heart out on the street in San Francisco-- her glorious voice and lifting guitar amazed me. She's as sweet as her music, and it's twice as nice to see her live. I wish her great success!

Running from the Sky - Lily
If you come to Lily through a Kate Bush (or possibly Tori Amos) trail, keep moving. Lily Holbrook does not have the range of voice (or does not reproduce such sonic range on this CD), the imaginative lyrics, or the maturity of theme. Does she have the potential? Not at this point. Her guitar playing (or is it Bills) sounds like polished...

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally good, August 2, 2005

I bought this album from Lily herself in Santa Monica's 3d Street Promenade a couple of days ago--heard her sing, couldn't stop the feelings, bought the CD. Exceptionally heartfelt and real songs--if you're into modern folk/singer-songwriter stuff, this is a must. And Lily got some more excellent songs up her sleeve--like the one she was singing when I stopped by (I giess it's called "The Last Day Of Our Acquaintance"). Good luck to her, she's talented, beautiful and really, really good!

For fans of Lily's latest album, this is a worthy addition. It contains many more acoustic and experimental songs, one of which is a very nice acoustic version of Mermaids. I recommend to buy Everything was Beautiful first (latest album) and then move on to this earlier one.
Highly recommended for fans of 'eclectic style' singer-songwriter music such as Tori Amos, Heather Nova, Juliana Hatfield, Tanya Donelly, etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars singer who reveals her heart, October 28, 2003

i met lily over two years ago while she performed nightly on the santa monica promenade...she was a random voice i heard half a block away and i was drawn in a destinylike way..her voice made me stop everything i was planning to do for the next hour..great voices do that..as i listened to her sing a unique array of covers by male and female artists she sprinkled in some of her own songs..it was those that formed my opinion of lily as a singer who sings from the heart..achingly so...she was often harrassed by noise monitors and police for being too loud..which was funny because she was the softest and most angelic singer out there..her beautiful looks and talent i am sure intimidated people...that was a shame..so many times i watched others stop like i did and spend amounts of time with her..watching her pick at her guitar with care and love..it is easy to fall in love with her voice and charm..only in looking back do you have memories of greatness..i know many record labels were interested in her and only if she is allowed to develop her artistic inner sense do i expect her to be happy..she deserves to be happy..much like the way she has made countless fans..boston is lucky to have her now...

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful! Don't keep this a secret!, February 9, 2002

Like one of the previous reviewers, I also happened upon Lily singing in Santa Monica in April of 2001. Her voice was amazing - it was better that night than on many of the CD tracks - strong yet on the edge of being brittle. My friend and I were quick enough to snap up two CDs before the ever-increasing crowd finished them off. I work at a university, and on a hunch, I passed the CD on to several student workers, who loved it and had many people in their dorms asking who it was, saying she "sounded like Jewel, but better."

i ran into Lily as she played on the 3rd street promenade in santa monica, and i was completely struck by her powerful voice and compelling guitar work. i listened to her play for an hour and then bought "Running From the Sky," one of the best musical investments that i have ever made. her songs invoke what i thought were long-gone memories of childhood, innocence, pain, happiness... all found within the lines of these incredible nine songs. my personal favorites include "King's Castle," "Spaceship," and "Another Winter." If you don't own this CD, then you are truly missing out on some of the most beautiful and original music released in the past decade. Keep up the good work, Lily!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gem of An Album, September 8, 2000

Lily's debut album, "Running From the Sky", is a rare gem. In a day and age when artists are compared to "Jewel" or "Sarah McLachlan", it is refreshing to see a new artist that cannot be pigeon-holed as emanating someone else's style. Lily is her own person with her own unique sound. This young chanteuse betrays her age with her artistic maturity and passionate lyricism. Her incredible vocal ability is complimented by the clever use of many different styles of instrumentation. From the light, whimsical "Little Red Riding Hood" to the mournful, haunting "Another Winter", Lily shows a range of emotion lacking in so many other singers. She displays her emotions with such depth and vulnerability that you feel like you are catching a glimpse into her mind. And what an amazing glimpse it is. Passionate, lyrical, soulful. In the years to come, I wouldn't be surprised to find artists being compared to Lily Holbrook, who has carved out her own niche in the musical world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lily's CD lifts me!!!, August 29, 2000
This review is from: Running From The Sky (Audio CD)
Her CD is nothing short of magical, with piercing melodies and webs of melancholy. The backing instruments (strings, keyboards, flutes, etc...) add a medieval spirit to these beautiful songs! And her voice... did you ever read about the Sirens??? It is unquestionably mesmerizing!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Enchanting! Transcending!! Magical!!, July 17, 2007
This review is from: Running From The Sky (Audio CD)
Running From the Sky was introduced to me when I went into this incredible store on Newbury in Boston, called The Fairy Shop. It was playing and I was moved to a deep sense of peace and gratitude while in there. I know the music was a part of it. I bought the cd there, brought it home, and her voice makes me remember. What a refreshing, hypnotic, ethereal voice and collection of songs.
