The missing link to the qmail era,
By A Customer
This review is from: Running qmail (Paperback)
I come from a network administration/system administration stand point and this book really rocks hard. This book is for beginners all the way up to sendmail.cf ninjas. I am impressed by the direct "no cloud" approach of Blum's writting and hope to see more of his work. I've seen Sams books..but always scared to see simple man pages or FAQ that are on the web.. but this book shows how to setup virtual mail boxes(ISP), POP3, UUCP(dead), office mail server, PPP configuration, mail forwarding.. and lots more by SCRATCH!.. don't miss out on this book..sweet little book on my bookshelf

There is simply no competition!,

Have you ever installed an operating system? Configured DNS? If not, what makes you look into a book about running an MTA? Unfortunately, the book is light, for it's thickness, on the straightforward technical explanation of what and how of Qmail. There's lots of fluff on not-very-related topics but even those don't get into enough depth to be useful. It would be a better investment to get a printout of some of the popular online qmail documentation and a couple of heavy duty binder clips. But what did I expect from Sams publishing? I suggest waiting for the O'reilly book.

If spending your whole career devoted to configuring Sendmail doesn't excite you, try qmail. It is a good email server and is much easier to work with. This book is a good place to start if you decide to go with qmail. It is pretty easy to read and while it probably doesn't tell you everything you'll want to know, it will help you get your email server up and running while you are still young.

Functional, but frowned upon,

While this book will help you get a functional qmail installation, it does so in a way the qmail community frowns upon. A much better guide to setting up qmail is LWQ (Life With Qmail) avaible freely on the web. The author of LWQ has also written a more comprehensive guide call the "qmail Handbook".In short if you're looking for help with how to set up and administer qmail, this is NOT the guide to follow.

Very Little Value for your Money: Mostly Chaff,
By
This review is from: Running qmail (Paperback)
It is very seldom that I actually return a book as I've done with this book. The on-line information available provides much, if not all, of what is needed to get qmail up and running--though a book would be welcomed to provide clear, practical answers for someone who wants to get qmail up and running... and that book is not this book. The first 160 pages of this book are waste--history and terminology and other things that someone who is just trying to get qmail up and running will never need to know. Even when you get past the waste, this book seems to avoid the practical needs of someone looking to get qmail up and running. The unessential information imparted in this book should be placed in an appendix. Unfortunately, that would leave just a few pages for useful chapter content. The *only* thing in this book's favor is that it is the only book in the market today on this topic... today. If you've got money to burn and open bookshelf space and time to sift through all of the chaff, then this book might be for you.

This was just what I needed,

This was a great book to help setting up Qmail from start to finish. It told me just what I needed to do step by step and got me up and running. Easy to read and follow even for someone with just a little-better-than-basic understanding of Linux.

Good starting point for new mail administrators,
By
This review is from: Running qmail (Paperback)
I can sum up my review in a few words: after reading this book, I had a working e-mail server. As a system administrator, there is always more to do than just install and go with any software package. This book provides the background information you will need to at least be aware of to set up any e-mail server on the Internet, and then shows you step-by-step how to do implement it with qmail. I disagree with a previous reviewer's comments that this book is a waste of time; that review strikes me as the review of an impatient person. If you are impatient, then all you have to do is skip the parts of this book you already know and go to the ones you don't. I would not venture to say that this is the absolute last word on qmail, but for someone like me who is new to e-mail administration, this book really fit the bill. I now have an appreciation for how qmail does business, and why it is considered more secure than sendmail. If you are new to e-mail administration, I suggest picking up this book if you want an e-mail server implemented with qmail. If you are already a e-mail administration veteran, then this book will seem a little to introductory; go with the online docs. I just like having the reference on my desk in paper form without having to use a ream of paper from the printer!

Don't listen to the nay sayers, this is a good book. It contains all you'll need to know to get qmail installed and running. After reading the first eight chapters I was easily able to get qmail working. This was a big improvement over all the false starts and dead ends from attempting to follow the Internet qmail how-to articles. The author also educates about many of the things that e-mail delivery relies on such as DNS and PPP for dial-up. This book is money well spent if you need to build a qmail server.

You want Free, Secure, Mail without the headache?,

You can either take a handfull of your favorite pain killers & search the net for some information (very little, and what is available is cryptic to say the least); or Buy This BOOK!Everything you ever wanted to know about qmail, but were afraid (or in too much pain) to ask. Qmail is by far the best mail server out there, it has everything you could ask for from Sendmail or Postfix, with the added bonus of security taken seriously. I have been running qmail for some time now, but never got everything I wanted out of it. This book helped me fine tune my mail services, manage virtual domains, aliases and various mailbox formats. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone running qmail, or considering migrating from another server.

Good but not great...,
By Matt Heaton (Provo, UT United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Running qmail (Paperback)
I thought this provided only basic instruction with regard to qmail. I wanted a book with specifics enough to do advanced mail forwarding and other options that I know qmail is capable of doing. I didn't find the necessary information in this book and had to dig it out on the net myself. The book was detailed in only a few areas. I give it an average rating.
