Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered two CD set containing expanded editions of a pair of albums from the singer, songwriter and producer. His first album, Runt (1970), features the hit single 'We Gotta Get You A Woman' as well as the nine-minute Rock epic 'Birthday Carol'. This edition features, for the first time ever on CD, all the different mixes, performances and exclusive songs from the November 1970 mispressing of the album. The Ballad Of Todd Rundgren (1971) features more of Todd's Laura Nyro-inspired Soul/Pop ballads, and another hit in 'Long Flowing Robe'. The four bonus tracks are all radio performances from this era. The package contains ephemera and rare photos, all the lyrics, and extensive notes by Paul Myers, extracted from his recent definitive book on Todd Rundgren. Edsel. 2011.

Broke Down and Busted/Runt:

Runt is Todd's first solo album and it's still one of my favorites. Todd was working as a recording engineer at the, then, new Record Plant in New York and part of the deal was that he received free studio time and he ended up making Runt. Originally released on Ampex Records in June 1970, Todd said that he was surprised that the record was released and it took the label awhile to release it. the album features mostly Todd with Tony and Hunt Sales backing him on bass and drums. Members of The American Dream, Rick Danko and Levon Helm have cameos as well as Mark "Moogy" Klingman. The disc starts off with Broke Down And Busted which finds Todd reinventing the blues while Believe In Me is a nice song making me wish that he still did this tune. We Gotta Get You A Woman is a radio friendly number while still being fun to listen to. Once Burned has an interesting melody and Devil's Bite is high energy. I'm In The Clique finds Todd showing his wit and a hook that'll stick in your brain all day. The medley of Baby, Let's Swing/The Last Thing You Said/Don't Tie My Hands is fun and rockin'. Birthday Carol is pretty but with a great blues rock beginning before drifting into a somber dreamlike piece. The first disc ends with a rarity, when the first pressing sold out, Ampex printed up a second batch using the wrong master which included different mixes and a couple of songs that didn't even turn up on the original (Hope I'm Around and Say No More). Those are all presented here for the first time on cd. Hope, I'm Around would be reworked for Todd's second album but I prefer the version here.

Be Nice To Me/The Ballad of Todd Rundgren:

I don't like The Ballad Of Todd Rundgren quite as much as I do Runt.

Amazing albums but, don't be fooled into buying the same CD twice. They're not remastered, they're only reissues of the same old Rhino pressings on a new label. The bonus tracks tacked onto the end aren't remastered either. They're sourced from an old outtakes disc from 1998. There's absolutely no difference in sound quality. They're only worth the money if you don't already own a copy.

These are great albums and the fact that you can get them together is a plus, but I have heard the old cd releases and then these back to back and they don't seem to be remastered or anything, at least I couldn't tell much difference. The only plus is that they have bonus tracks that are totally worth the purchase even if you have the original cd releases. These albums were mainly piano ballads and your sort of standard rock and roll before he started to change into the progressive Wizard.

Two classic albums from Todd Rundgren, "Runt" and "Runt: The Ballad of Todd Rundgren" Edsel can have a hit or miss quality in their reissues. For example, the latest batch of Robert Palmer reissues (put out in 2013)appear to be sourced from mp3's while their reissues of Ian McCulloch's solo albums are quite good. Luckily, "Runt" and "Ballad" both sound quite nice here; some reviews claim that these have not been remastered but there ARE mastering credits in the booklets and they are different than the original Rhinos. I can't claim to know how extensive the remastering was here (they sound very similair to the Rhino's although a bit less bright)but the real reason for most fans to get these are the bonus tracks that were released on the Japanese reissues back in 1998.

Rundgren's first album finds him searching for his voice as a singer (Rundgren admits as much in the notes) but you really would never know it--he tackles a wide variety of styles and does so with the expertise. We also get the alternate versions of the tracks that were released on a rare pressing of the album.

The second album "Ballad" featurs the entire album plus 4 live tracks that were also on the Japanese reissue.

We get an extensive booklet by Rundgren biographer Paul Myers as well as the lyrics and credits for the original album.

How does this sound? I can only compare these to the Rhino reissues. They sound pretty good if a tad less bright. Reportedly the best sounding version out there are the original Castle reissues which had their own unique mastering but I haven't heard them so can't do a fair comparison. What makes this essential for fans are the tracks for the alternate version of his first album and the live tracks.

once again edsel come though, this two on two cd release is long overdue. the bonus runt tracks makes this worth the purchase alone. sound (remastering) is very good a little louded, but does not sound brickwalled,( at least not to me ) nice liner notes ( could say a little more about the alt. track) but well worth the price .

cd 1 consists of 2 versions of the lp runt. apparently they released the wrong version and corrected it. i bought it at k-mart when it was first released and it was one of my favorites; but then bought the 8 track to play in my paneled van - and it wasn't the same record. i was pissed. the second official one didn't have the full version of baby let's swing which may be the best song on the record. this release correct the error since both versions of runt are on cd 1.

cd 2 is the ballad of plus live extras including 3 live in the studio songs recorded by michael tearson of wmmr incl a beatle toone - hold me tight.

the sound is immaculate.

very highly recommended.

bad
