Runt is a great realistic fiction book written by Marion Dane Bauer. This book is a pretty good sized book with 138 pages. The author learned about wolves before she wrote this story. You can learn some interesting facts in this book about wolves. This is a great book to read and I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Runt, January 10, 2005
This review is from: Runt (Hardcover)
Runt is a great realistic fiction book written by Marion Dane Bauer. This book is a pretty good sized book with 138 pages. The author learned about wolves before she wrote this story. You can learn some interesting facts in this book about wolves. This is a great book to read and I highly recommend it.
In this book, a new mother wolf gives birth to 5 newborn cubs. Their names where Leader, Sniffer, Runner, Thinker, and the smallest cub Runt. King, Runts father, named him Runt because he was so small. King wanted Runt to survive, but he did not expect him to because he was so small. Runt does grow up and goes on thrilling adventures. He went to humans when he needed help and called to his family when he found food. Runt wants to prove himself worthy of a new name. Runt wants a new name because he thinks his name is insulting him and makes him think that nobody cares about him. Is that enough to prove himself worthy to have his name changed? Read this book and find out!
I like the way the author used words. She used more descriptive words like trotted and plodded instead of ran or walked. With so much detail I can tell more of what Runt was feeling. For example the author wrote this sentence: "Runt trotted, then plodded, then trotted again, though he followed nothing now, no disappearing tail, no diminishing scent." In that sentence you can tell more that Runt was worried. If she just said walked he could have been feeling anything.
Even though Runt and his pack are not real, the author makes you believe they are. Two examples in the book are that the pack would also hunt for food and they stay away from humans. Those facts about wolves make it seem like Runt's pack are real. We all know wolves do not speak in a language that humans would understand. The way the author writes makes you think that wolves do speak like we could understand them.
I thought that this book was a great, interesting, action packed, realistic fiction book. It had so many different feelings in it. How can you not like a book like that? I highly recommend this book to everybody

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wolf with Character, September 20, 2003
By
Bonnie Fisher (Mendota Heighter, MN United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Runt (Hardcover)
RUNT, like all books by Marion Dane Bauer, tells a gripping story in which the main character, in this case a young wolf, makes one mistake after another and through them learns and grows in character. In this case Runt competes with his siblings to gain a place in his pack and his father's approval as he seeks to show that he is more than just the runt of the litter. His adventures are increasingly harrowing making it difficult to put the book down. I found myself reading late into the night until I was satisfied that Runt would gain a satisfying measure of wisdom and belonging. Bauer is expert at telling tales that intrigue children while dealing with strong psychologicla issues in beautiful language that sinks deep into the reader's heart. Runt illustrates this one more time

5.0 out of 5 stars Life as a wolf, June 4, 2003
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Runt (Hardcover)
Pack mentality is key in the life of a wolf. Position within a pack defines who a wolf is. Runt, the smallest of his litter is given no other name by his father the pack alpha. He is treated as the lowest member because he is unable to prove himself due to his small size. This bothers Runt as he seeks to win his father's approval.
In addition to his own struggles Runt becomes caught within pack politics. There is some unrest within the pack because one member wishes to become the new leader. This story describes how one young wolf fills his role within the pack and struggles to understand humans and the world around him.
This is a well written book that I would highly recommend to anyone interested in wolves.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BOOK YOU CAN'T MISS!!, October 10, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Runt (Hardcover)
...
I Love This Book!!!!
It was about a little wolf pup named Runt because he was the smallest wolf of the litter. Runt's mother's name was Silver. Silver had five pups.Three were boys. They were Thinker,Leader and Runt. Two were girls. They were Runner and Sniffer. Silver also had two other kids, a boy and a girl. The boy's name was Helper and the girl's name was Hunter. When Silver had the five pups, Helper and Hunter were just one years old. Runt's pack didn't get food everyday. Sometimes they had to wait three whole days. I don't want to tell the whole story so I'll stop, but I would recommend this book to anyone who likes animals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational, September 3, 2003
This review is from: Runt (Hardcover)
I have read the previous reviews and feel I should add that the main ideas in this book apply to issues people encounter in life
such as believing in oneself, overcoming obstacles, handling disappointment, excepting things as they come and as they are, being wise and cautious, and being optimistic. I don't know what the reviewer who gave this book one star was looking for but I have seldom seen a children's book that covers so much ground. It is even a good vocabulary builder. This is the first chapter book that my daughter has found interesting and she is not particularly interested in wolves.

5.0 out of 5 stars CGE Student Review, June 1, 2009
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Runt (Paperback)
I love the book Runt by Marion Dane Bauer. I would rate this book 5 star. This book is my favorite book. Marion Dane Bauer wrote other books too such as The Secret Painted House, and The Very Best Daddy. This book teaches that everyone can be a hero no matter what their size is.

The Main Characters in this book are King, Silver, Runt's brothers and sisters, and Runt. My Favorite character in this book is Runt. Runt is my favorite character because he is always so curious about everything.

In the beginning of this book you will find out runt is very small and weak. You will also find out that Runt looks a lot like his father, king and no one likes to hang around Runt. I think the most exiting scene is when Runt was born and no one thinks he will live but he does. If you want to find out how this interesting book ends you will have to read it to find out! I know you will love this book as much as I did.

I would recommend this book to kids who like easy books to read about the life of a small wolf. I like this book because it is about animals and I like animals. This book will always make you wonder what is going to happen next. This book is sometimes sad but it will always make you smile.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book, May 10, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Runt (Paperback)
This book is very well written, and even though the wolves can talk, the book still keeps to the basics of realistic wolves.

Runt is rather pathetic, but of course, he keeps trying. I just think that it might be too extreme to have Thinker die BECAUSE of Runt, though.

This is a great book and an enjoyable read for young people. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars great book, April 23, 2006
This review is from: Runt (Paperback)
Runt is a magical book about survival and about finding your place within the pack. Runt is the smallest of his litter and no one in the pack thought that he could make it. He is rejected by many of the wolves in the pack and is usually a loner. The only one that is really there for him is his mom aand even his dad has doubts abouit him. Runt gets into alot of trouble through out the story and is even the cause of his brother dying. But in the end he proves everyone that even though he's the little guy, he can do everything and anything that all of the other wolves can do.
