Rupert Ratio's book is a very complete work on any detail that has to do with the BSA unit single engines. This is obviously a dedicated work that was years in the making while Mr. Ratio gathered his vast experience about these motorcycle engines.
I rated the book four stars however, not because it was not a detailed work on the B series unit engine, but rather I was looking to find an easy to understand way of crankshaft shimming, but found this book was just as cryptic as other manuals. My overhauls on these engines have shown that previous mechanics struggle with this procedure, as well. Most will not be able to avoid the destruction of expensive new main bearings while trying to figure out the shim stack with most giving up and resorting to using no shimming for the crank whatever! I was hoping to see if Mr. Ratio had discovered various methods to the shimming problem making it easier on the service techs in the field. I developed one method over the years that I apply to both A series and B series engines with fast and dependable results without sacrificing a set of new main bearings to accomplish the correct shim spacing. I'm sure there are other methods, as well?
The rest of the manual is well worth the money and the read. Definitely a "must have" for those that ride and service all B series BSA unit singles!
