About the Author

Raymond T. Coward, MSW, PhD, is the Raymond E. and Erin Stuart Schultz Professor and Dean of the College of Health and Human Development at The Pennsylvania State University and is a professor of health policy and administration. Dr. Coward was the founding editor of The Journal of Rural Health (1985-1990), now in its 20th year of publication, and is the author or editor of eight books, including several focused on rural populations.

Lisa A. Davis, MHA, is the Director of the Pennsylvania Office of Rural Health, where she is responsible for the overall direction and leadership of the state office of rural health, including developing and sustaining linkages with state and national partners and expanding the office's role in enhancing the health status of rural Pennsylvanians. She is the immediate Past-President of the Pennsylvania Rural Health Association and immediate Past-Secretary of the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health's Board of Directors.



Carol Hancock Gold, PhD, is a faculty member in the Department of Biobehavioral Health, Penn State University, and an Associate Professor in the Institute of Gerontology at Jonkoping University College of Health Sciences in Jonkoping, Sweden.



Helen Smiciklas-Wright, PhD, is Professor of Nutrition and Director of the Diet Assessment Center in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at The Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Wright was co-editor with Drs. Gueldner and Burke of Preventing and Managing Osteoporosis (Springer Publishing, 2000).



Luanne E. Thorndyke, MD, FACP, is the Associate Dean for Professional Development and Associate Professor of Medicine of The Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. Born and raised in rural Nebraska, she is committed to improving the health and status of women and men, both rural and urban, through clinical practice, educational programs, administrative leadership, and community service.



Fred W. Vondracek, PhD, is Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies and Outreach in the College of Health and Human Development at The Pennsylvania State University, Professor of Human Development in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies, and Honorary Professor at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena in Germany.
