Nothing Earth-Shattering or Revelatory,

This review is from: The Rurouni Kenshin Companion:The Unoffical Guide (Mysteries & Secrets) (Paperback)
If you've read the manga and/or watched the anime, you will not learn anything new from this "companion." It offers brief summaries of characters (main and secondary) and supposed trivia and little known facts. I read the whole thing last night and, aside from it giving cross-references and what seems like cheat sheets to characters and styles, there's really nothing of substance here that is anything revelatory for the typical rabid Rurouni Kenshin fan. Frankly, it reads like cliff notes for elementary/jr. high set school. For the same price, if your collection isn't completed yet, buy a VizBig volume of the manga (buy them all, actually). The manga is still the first and best source of RK and the art is amazing (many pages are beautifully colored and just jump off the page). I can't believe 3 volumes in 1 is under $13! Money better spent on the manga than on this RK Companion, in my opinion. |
