About the Author

Nobuhiro Watsuki earned international accolades for his first major manga series, Rurouni Kenshin, about a wandering swordsman in Meiji Era Japan. Serialized in Japan's Weekly Shonen Jump from 1994 to 1999, Rurouni Kenshin quickly became a worldwide    sensation, inspiring a spin-off short story ("Yahiko no Sakabato"), an animated TV series, and several animated movies. Watsuki's latest series, Buso Renkin, also available in English from VIZ Media, began publication in Weekly Shonen Jump in June 2003.

RK: Restoration Vol. 2 is...a doozy, to start off. While the first volume understandably went off the track from the movie's plot (this manga is an inspiration of the movie and not a direct reiteration of it, after all) this was off the rails in a way Watsuki only knows how to do it.

I am quite thankful he has kept up with his 'Free Talk' segments or else we the readers would have no clue as to what he was thinking by altering so many of the characters. I'm gonna break it down into points as follows on what simply bothering me about the characters, the storytelling, and how it deviated from the original story (and yes, there will be spoilers)...

1.) Kenshin's character is significantly more dark in this version. Perhaps justifiably so! There is a lot of darkness in his past after all, and in the original RK manga we are given snippets as the story goes on and unfolds over many chapters. There is emphasis on his 'fake smile' that hides his true nature and any hints or nuance to a hope that he could live to be a normal swordsman (something Kenshin very much believed in prior to the arrival of Saitou to the Kamiya Dojo) was nonexistent. This Kenshin believes that he has "no place in modern society" since the war; that's why he wanders. Ugh, Kenshin--GROW UP. What is this depressing, detached nonsense? Kenshin -cares- about the people of Japan! This attitude does not sound like someone who would protect whoever was in reach of his sakabatou! Of course he would not claim anywhere as his home, he is rurouni...but he really made himself sound like a dejected outsider. I almost don't recognize him in some parts.

2.) Kaoru and her 'naive lie' on the nature of swordsmanship.

I was originally skeptical when I heard about this series, but I picked up volume 1 and fell in love and volume 2 is no different. The art is gorgeous. The story is fun and full of nostalgia that makes you want to read through the original series rapid-fire.

This is the second and last volume of "Restoration", a reboot/parallel universe AU of Watsuki's "Rurouni Kenshin" manga. In this volume we once again meet Jin-e, Saito, Tsubame, the onmitsu, Kuroko, Megumi and the gang. Watsuki also has some very good notes about his writing, art and research processes in making these books and the original series that you should definitely check out. His notes are always interesting and if you have "Busou Renkin" or the original "Rurouni Kenshin" manga, you should also check those out.

The book arrived on time and in good condition.
