5.0 out of 5 stars It's made life around the house MUCH nicer!
I bought two of these from woot.com for a total of $55 with shipping and everything some weeks back. I live in SW Florida where there are many mosquitoes, and I would have them buzzing in my ear at night. Since I've put the two of them up for a few weeks now, I've had virtually NO mosquitoes in or around my house.

It works by interrupting the mosquito life...

3.0 out of 5 stars It helps somewhat...
It catches some Mosquitos and makes a dent in there population. However, it is not enough to completely shield your yard/picnic from being bothered.

I've left this device operating for 4 days straight in what I consider mosquito country. I get bit constantly in my yard while I garden and have resorted to long sleeves and pants. In four days, I've "controlled" exactly 4 mosquitos, 2 moths, and 4-6 very small gnat-looking bugs. The device contains a blue LED and a fan similar to one in a PC. It's louder than I would tolerate my PC to be though. There is no pheromone. There's no CO2. Just a blue LED and a fan. I wouldn't consider this to be "state-of-the-art." I bought it because it looks the cutest and I was willing to take a chance. I paid the stupid tax on this one. Don't repeat my mistake.

It works by interrupting the mosquito life cycle. As it captures the adults, they cannot then mate or lay eggs. It doesn't work overnight, and it's not meant to. After all of the eggs in your area hatch and are depleted, there are no mosquitoes around to lay new eggs, and the impact is very noticeable.

3.0 out of 5 stars Jury is still out, August 18, 2008
This review is from: Rush Hampton 61005 Mosquito Catcher, Plastic, Single Pack (Lawn & Patio)
"Mosquito Catcher" as a name was an extremely bad marketing move. Your expectations are a drawer full of dead mosquitos. After watching the DVD that came with the machine, one realizes that this device does not really "catch" mosquitos, but instead grinds them up in the fan that is used to suck them in. The bits that are left fall to the ground. So to judge the effectiveness based on what's in the compartment isn't really fair.

I'm still not sure if this works. Instructions are to run for a month to fully disrupt the breeding cycle. I'll have to wait and see if the insects are less prevalent in a few weeks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great!, October 15, 2009
This review is from: Rush Hampton 61005 Mosquito Catcher, Plastic, Single Pack (Lawn & Patio)
I've used mine for several seasons. One year left it out all winter where it got rain and snowed on--and still it worked great the following summer. During torment season (e.g. summer) each time I open the drawer I find all kinds of: little wings, bug parts, etc. Can I tell that there Mosquito's parts? Nope. But, we are getting bit less. I wonder if the other people who don't like this thing have placed it correctly? One last thing, this thing will not just zap all the mosquitoes in your yard, but will slowly lower the population. Use it from Spring to Fall for best results.

1.0 out of 5 stars allready dead mosquito catcher, September 1, 2009
This review is from: Rush Hampton 61005 Mosquito Catcher, Plastic, Single Pack (Lawn & Patio)
Purchased 8/1. Motor burned up 8-22. Wasn't working as well (in terms of a mosquito free area) as the original we had for 2-3 years before it quit.

It's a joke. If it worked they wouldn't make it so the bugs get chopped up so you can't see the remains. If it really worked they would want you to see the tray full of them. I live near the WI river which has a very bad mosquito problem and it does nothing. Maybe it works down south but I doubt it. Just goes to show; its the marketing, not the product, that makes the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars My yard is virtually bug free!, November 18, 2008
This review is from: Rush Hampton 61005 Mosquito Catcher, Plastic, Single Pack (Lawn & Patio)
Just one of these has changed my yard completely! I put one of these on my deck and run it all the time. About once a week I go to empty the cartridge and it is FILLED with bugs that would have been eating me up! Great product!

4.0 out of 5 stars Seems to be working, August 29, 2008
This review is from: Rush Hampton 61005 Mosquito Catcher, Plastic, Single Pack (Lawn & Patio)
I purchased two of these from [...] (about [...] for the pair). The first few days after having them out, I had lots of little mosquito parts in the drawer (difficult to determine an exact number due to the fan cutting them up). In my area of the country (S. Carolina), we have a lot of Asian Tiger Mosquitoes that don't bother waiting until the evening to fly by and have a sip of blood. They are out all day. As I mentioned before, I had some good results initially but the last few weeks I haven't seen much beyond moths, sweat bees, yellow jackets, and the occasional mosquito. I think this is a good thing as there is a noticeable population reduction and I consider the collateral damage to also be pests.

I also own a Mosquito Magnet. It was very effective at catching and reducing the population when I lived in MN, but not so much on the mosquitoes in the South. I ran it for a couple of months in SC without a whole lot of luck (maybe 40-50 mosquitoes per month using the Lurex attractant).

The biggest problem that I've had with these is keeping them running. One one of my units burned out after a couple of days and I had to open it up and solder in a new LED (available at Radio Shack). The other burned out its transformer after about 6 months. As you can see from all the dead bugs in the pictures that I added above, these things certainly work around here.

Update - May, 2009 - The fan on my second unit died. Will replace it with the fan from the unit with the burned up transformer. Would reducing rating to 3 Stars for quality of build if I could (for some reason it won't let me change that).

I've been running this machine for three weeks non-stop as the directions require. I live in Northern NJ where we've had a horrible mosquito season. I've caught noting but little white moths and a few flies. This thing is a joke and a waste of money.
