Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

In his first book of poems, Gander writes of the everyday (walking, kicking a can) and the exotic (Japanese sumo wrestlers) in a fresh and exacting style that seems to embody a way of thinking often uplifting, yet heavy with a darker vision as well. The poems pose interesting polaritiesbetween East and West, sexuality and asceticism, the pushes and pulls of life and language: "Where a man loves a woman there is an island/of broken horses, stranded wheelbarrows/ listing with cement. Morning is a flat blaze./ She boils water. Nervous hands." And later: "The black bar in the gold circle/ of the goat's eye/ shifts." It is a similar shifta movement just a bit surprising, when one is looking carefully, that produces the slight skew of images and language that make these poems so interesting. Jessica Grim, NYPL
