One of CCM's all-time finest, January 23, 2012
This review is from: Russ Taff (Audio CD)
This album was born out of Taff's crisis-of-faith brought about by his reaction to the televangelist scandals (Jim Bakker, Jerry Falwell's take-over of Heritage USA, Jimmy Swaggart, etc.). Lyrics from the first track, "Shake," are still relevant today ("I'm tired of great big men with ego-kingdoms in mind, trying to tell me how to spend my money and time")--although probably even more so now in the political arena than just that of personality-driven megachurchianity.
"Down in the Lowlands" takes Charlie Peacock's original and amps it...with Charlie on back vocals. "This Love is Strong" has to be among the most honest treatments of the sacrament of marriage, heartfelt and road-tested. And even 25 years since claiming "I Still Believe" from The Call, Taff's unbridled passion and conviction still brings chills in 2012. Several songs may evoke memories of U-2 from around the same late-80s period. Some of the synthesizer arrangements make the recording sound a bit dated in places, but the lyrics hold up, as does the sense of disillusion, moral outrage, and heartfelt spiritual anguish...tempered with hope.
This may well stand as Taff's most autobiographical recording. I certainly wouldn't mind being remembered for such a legacy.
