I purchased many Russell items over the years and have never been disappointed. The Russell Athletic Men's Fleece Open Bottom Pants are no exception. The pants are a quality product. The pockets are a great feature. The leg length will have to be hemmed to fit. The pants are comfortable. I wear them frequently and really enjoy them. I highly recommend these pants. UPDATE TWO YEAR LATER - October, 2011. These Russell pants are just amazing. I wear them every day. They have had countless washings over the past two years. They are very comfortable and just seem to last, and last, and last. After two years of heavy use, I still enthusiastically recommend these pants.

I used to love Russell Athletic sweatpants. They are well made and comfortable, and look good. But on this latest one I got, the pockets are so small, it won't even keep your keys from falling out. Dont even think about putting your wallet or cellphone in there. Too bad. The older version had roomy pockets; you could feel secure putting stuff in there. A big disappointment, this latest version.

Just received these sweat pants, good heavyweight fleece material. My only problem is the length, No way I can use them till I get a good two inches taken off the bottom and I am not a short guy,.. other than that these were very nice sweat pants.

I ordered five pairs of these Russell Athletic Pants in varying sizes for varying members of my family for Christmas. Who doesn't need an extra pair of warm pants for the cold weather? I particularly like the pockets in that they are a different and less bulky material than the pants and fit flat against the hip without sticking out. Also, they are deep enough to be usable without change or keys spilling out. The fleece material is wonderful with the warmth on the inside where needed and the outside is a nice looking pair of pants to wear anywhere. Russell Athletic is a name you can depend on and I'm glad to find them here on Amazon.
Update 1-7-13: I am trying to get back 2 pairs of 4x to return, hopefully without the receipt which I no longer have after Christmas. I have learned that it is very easy to return simply by going online with Amazon and printing off a return label.
On the XL sizes we discovered that simply washing and drying in dryer shrinks ONLY the length of the pants leaving them plenty big and roomy - which is a good thing - leaving the pants at a better length with no need to hem. These pants are VERY warm and cozy.

When these pants arrived, I could tell right away that the material was top quality. The look and feel was superior. I expect these to wear in comfort and last for some time. Russell Athletic calls this new technology "Dri-Power" due to it's moisture wicking capability. It's wonderful for the price.
But, I also found that even though I ordered them in my size, the length of these pants are for a basketball player size guy... way to long for my size. I ordered a "2X" size not a "2X long" size, and yet they still came long. I tried washing them in hot water, but they still won't shrink much. I guess I'll have to have them hemmed shorter. Also, as mentioned above, the pockets are dreadfully inadequate to keep much of anything other than car keys and some change. You'll have to hand carry a wallet or cell phone.
Because of these flaws I couldn't give it more than a 4-star rating.

* As sweatpants go, these look / feel like a better item of clothing.
* They run a little bit long so you may need to hem them or hike'em.
* The sweatpants are light weight and don't feel thick like typical sweatpants do, but they do hold up well.
* If you dislike tight fitting sweatpants or ones that are tight at the ankle these sweatpants are great.
* They have two deep front pockets, deep enough to put your wallet and watch in one side, and phone and keys in the other. You won't lose them even sitting on you lawn tractor. Done it.
* I'd give em 5 stars for the price and quality, its just having the extra length to deal with. Still worth it.

I am 5'9" and ordered two pairs of these pants in black 2XL a few weeks ago. I am delighted with the roomy fit in the legs (without being too baggy in the waist as some brands are) and the nice tailored look of the open cuff. I had previously owned Russell pants that I think are the same pants but used to be 80% cotton and 20% poly; I loved them but they kept getting shorter. I hoped the 50/50 blend might shrink less.
Unlike some reviewers experience, they were NOT really too long for me. I washed it in cold water and even stretched them slightly in length while wet (a habit) and hung them to dry (not in dryer at all) before wearing. They shrank up only slightly, to a perfect length, would not want them shorter. They are warm, soft and very cozy this cold winter in the Midwest.
My only complaint is that they already are showing a little bit of pilling, after only three washings, and I am disappointed that they so soon do not look like new. They are not fading or shrinking any more that I can tell.
I have a large front loading washer and use cold water, gentle cycle, only with similar soft knit items in the same load, and do not put in dryer. I should have put them inside out for washing, and will remember to do this in subsequent washes, to help minimize additional pilling.
Overall I am happy with them since they fit well, hold their shape without bagging in the knees a lot, are warm and comfortable, and generally look nicer than most sweats.

I looked at a variety of inexpensive fleece pants; just something to wear around, grab a light workout, not for running or anything hard core. For the price (less than $20), these are excellent pants. Well made, comfortable, sufficiently tailored so they don't look like clown pants (which was a problem with a pair I bought from Champion). The quality is on par with fleece made by other major brands that price out at around $50. I've washed them several times, and they had minimal shrinkage and kept their shape. The only thing minor criticism I have is that the elastic waistband could be a little tighter; it does have a drawstring, but I thought it was a little loose for a medium (I'm a 32 waist). This, however, is a minor criticism and I would recommend these without reservation.

Ten years ago, I bought a pair of black Russell Athletic sweat pants that are easily the best sweat pants I have ever owned. They fit well, looked good, have held up well, and worked well (elastic band, draw string, pockets). Sadly, all good things must come to and end, and they are starting to wear thin and the elastic in the waistband is getting loose enough that even the draw string doesn't help us much as it used to.
Anyway, I looked and looked online and in stores, and this was the closest I could find, so I bought them. Unfortunately, they are not even close to the original thing. If you have older Russell sweat pants and like them, stay away from this product! First of all, they look different — much cheaper and the fabric isn't smooth and sleek (I know, that sounds funny for sweat pants, the but the older ones were that way). It feels rougher on the inside, too. The elastic in the waist seems loose from the start, and the pockets are pretty much worthless. The older model pants had nice, deep pockets that held all kinds of things. These wouldn't keep a wallet in there for five seconds.
All in all, these sweat pants were a big waste of money.
