Dominic Lieven is professor of Russian history at the London School of Economics. His previous books include Empire: The Russian Empire and Its Rivals and Nicholas II: Twilight of the Empire. Three of his direct ancestors were generals in the Battle of Leipzig.

It has become stylish of late to blame to start of WWI on Russia. It was not a simple thing at all, as Dominic Leiven, a specialist in Czarist Russian History shows. Instead, he shows how the very alliances that were made to prevent war instead moved the nations to the start of it. The tragedy of the whole thing was that Russia was well on the way to shaking off its backwardness and was already gaining ground as an industrial nation when WWI broke out and ultimately went it into Revolution. Germany and the other nations were afraid of this progress. The historian has other books that I have since ordered and read. His grasp of the history is worth studying. Regretfully, there are not too many copies of this book around; I personally think it should be re-printed. Leiven makes good sense of the recently opened Russian and Soviet files and is a prolific Russian speaker. His grasp of things Russian is extraordinary.
