A superb account on the expansion of Russia eastbound to California, August 3, 2011
This review is from: Russian American Colonies, 1798-1867: To Siberia and Russian America Three Centuries of Russian Eastward Expansion : A Documentary Record, Vol 3 (North Pacific Studies) (Hardcover)
I have the 3 book set on this incredible story: from Ivan the Terrible in the 1500's to the Alaska sell-off in 1867.
I will give it a 5 star rating because of the sheer work involved in rounding up those incredible documents - and translating them; how did they get them?
Being of russian descent by my father I have been made fully aware of this adventure and I still remember him telling me that Hollywood did nothing really, because it only sang the glory of the wild west; he said: but what about making movies on Ermak, his Kossak cronies and all the other unknown adventurers who explored Siberia, Alaska, and the Pacific coast to the Baja peninsula for Mother Russia?
Some Russian directors made a few, more Hollywoodian than others!
But, one comment though, I would also have given it a 4 star because this is presented as a compilation, page by page, and it would benefit the story to be rewritten as a novel, essay, analyses... in other words, something that would be more "user friendly", considering, of course, that it would be a consumer product as opposed to a didactical work of major importance.
What a magnificent reference work.
And I still hope some movie director grabs one of those stories! Go buy them!
