Gr 7 Up--Originally published in 1989, this fine volume has been revised with only a few minor oversights, such as the failure to note that Solzhenitsyn has now returned to his homeland and a reference to ``current restrictions'' on religion there. A coherent survey of Russian and Soviet history provides the background necessary for understanding the reasons for the waves of immigrants from that part of the world. To the author's credit, he clearly delineates among these groups before turning his attention to the subject of their adjustments to life in North America. The book closes with a chapter on their contributions to our scientific advances and culture. Well-chosen black-and-white photographs add to the usefulness of the presentation, although there are no photos of Jews to balance the six full-color shots related to the practice of Russian Orthodoxy. It is unfortunate that the list for further reading was not updated. Nevertheless, this is a good resource for reports.
