Excellent entry to the language for those who know some,

This review is from: Russian As We Speak It (Paperback)
This book really works you into the idioms and ways of expressing things. Once you know some grammer and the alphabet, this shows you how to say commonly used expressions. Its probably the next best thing to having someone who speaks the language with which to practice (which of course is the best way to grow in a language).

Excellent - but you need a foundation in Russian,

This is a really good book, given to me by a Russian instructor at DLI. You must have a fairly good foundation in Russian to make it worthwhile - don't get the book and expect it to teach you the cyrillic alphabet - you need to already have that and some pretty good vocabulary. The emphasis is on conversation (of course) but there are bits of grammar put in now and then. Overall, a really good book

This is one of the best intermediate level grammar books on the market. It has very dense but digestible chapters, including dialogues, vocabulary, and exercises with an answer key. On the other hand, although the content is exceptionally good, the early versions of this book date from Soviet times and are indicative of poor Soviet quality--the book's glue binding inevitably falls apart within days. For the paperback version, a good idea is to have the book spiral bound upon purchase (and perhaps the covers laminated, too) or else you will end up with a stack of loose papers.
