3.0 out of 5 stars Stalin the liberator?
Spectacular footage and in-depth strategic analysis...the only problem i had was it seemed to be a bit biased against the german side...again and again mentions 'german atrocites' and terror against the russian civilians and makes no mention WHATSOEVER of russian atrocities against the german and eastern european people...the russians in the end are portrayed as heroes...

This set of four videos, featuring analysis by Professor John Erickson of the University of Edinburgh, is a model for the intelliegent presentation of military history via video. This medium is especially appropriate where, as was the case on the Eastern Front, everything was done on a large scale, both in terms of the distances and the number of troops involved in complex military actions.

Professor Erickson is especially impressive -- knowledgeable and unbiased, yet modest, his sole obhective is simply to inform and to talk about a subject that obviously fascinates him.

If you have any interest in military history, or even if you have none, you should consider buying these videos. They are superb.

UPDATE: NOTE: This program is available in four separate DVDs titled The Russian Front:

The Russian Front: Barbarossa - Hitler Turns East
The Russian Front: The Road to Stalingrad
The Russian Front: From Stalingrad to Kursk
The Russian Front: The Battles for Berlin

4.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional documentary, April 10, 2005
This review is from: Russian Front [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Superb footage of both sides of the war between the nazis and
the communists.
A "bit" complacent with the russian side because of the enormous
sacrifices committed by the populace and also the fact that
Stalin was an ally at the time...
Still, a lot of very knowledgeable comments and info from John Erickson.
Maps could have been better. Running commentary clearly not
objective but then very few are concerning this period of
recent history.

5.0 out of 5 stars A state of art documentary and a true story, March 15, 2004

This review is from: Russian Front [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The "Russian Front" is a state of art documentary, really reflecting what was going on the Russian Front for the period 1941-1945. For the very first time after Cold War, we're finally able to see the truth about the Russian Front. This documentary is A++ . Highly recommended.

Spectacular footage and in-depth strategic analysis...the only problem i had was it seemed to be a bit biased against the german side...again and again mentions 'german atrocites' and terror against the russian civilians and makes no mention WHATSOEVER of russian atrocities against the german and eastern european people...the russians in the end are portrayed as heroes who had defeated the quote "cancerous malignancy of national socialism" and the german "tyranny which had turned vast tracts of europe into a surreal playground of sadists and perverts" ! - doesnt sound very unbiased to me! Stalin the liberator? please. To be fair these statements are not made by the very expert and unbiased John Erickson himself (who analyzes the battles and such) but by the narrator of the films...stalingrad and kursk recieve the most attention...was disapointed that the battle for berlin recieved no analysis...propaganda aside i enjoyed the set and most of the great footage i had not seen before.
