Book Description

September 1, 2000
There has been interest in bringing Russian hockey players to the NHL since 1972. Yet for nearly 30 years, Soviet authorities did everything they could to prevent players from joining teams overseas. Russian Revolution: Exodus to the NHL examines history and events that allowed for the first Russians to play in the NHL in 1989 and the changes to the sport in North America and Russia. Russian Revolution also chronicles the experience of players in adjusting to life in North America and their subsequent impact on the sport. It is the definitive story of the last ten years - the most important years - in the transformation of the National Hockey League and the devolution of the Russian Hockey League.

4.0 out of 5 stars The breakup of the big red machine, March 14, 2000
John Sanful's work is extremely well researched and informative and sheds light on an important development of not only Soviet hockey but of hockey in general. The fall of the Iron curtain and the exodus to the NHL has resulted in a blurring of the canadian school vs. the Soviet school and hockey has thus followed globalisation into the path of homogenisation The history of the final years of the USSR is a immensly compelling read and the clearly written style of Sanful's work provides for easy reading. A very informative book and a must buy not only for hockey fans but for anyone with a sociological interest in the final years of what was the USSR
