Book Description

Contributions to the Study of World Literature March 18, 1987
This scholarly work contains the best and most representative critical essays by leading Russian Romantic writers from the period 1815 to 1835, with the information needed to make them meaningful. The editor has provided names, dates, events, literary and critical subjects, and heretofore unknown facts about the Romantic movement in Russia and the influence of European thought on the development of Russian culture.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Leighton's anthology offers a representative sample of criticism by significant Russian writers of the first third of the 19th century. The essays reflect Russian attitudes toward European romantics, search for a definition of romanticism, and discuss issues crucial to the development of the romantic movement in Russia. Leighton's introduction expands and explicates the ideas of the original critics. His concise narrative history of the age brings together all of the concerns of Russian romanticism, finds order in a chaotic period, and places the movement in its European context. Leighton also includes a glossed index, a note on journals and literary almanacs of the time, a selective but good bibliography, and commentaries to the essays. The commentaries explain obscure allusions, relate the essays to their authors' other works, and reveal each author's biases in the contemporary polemics surrounding Russian romanticism. The accurate translations, all but one by the editor, retain their original style. Most of the essays, which appear in English for the first time, are complete; when Leighton abridges, he edits well. Especially useful to those working in early-19th-century Russian literature, European intellectual and cultural history, comparative literature, and aesthetics, this book is a valuable addition to the growing body of work in English about Russian romanticism.”–Choice
